I would be changing my insurance company straight away if they wouldn't cover that.
Given that most crashes (not accidents, I hate that term) are caused by stupidity, they should cover it. I have heard of that situation being covered (had an assessor here looking at a vehicle with the same circumstances).

"stupid is as stupid does"
No where near as dramatic but the trainee at work put 21ltrs of ulp in a 35ltr tank of our greens mower which has a Kubota Diesel in it.
After getting about 1/3rd around the cut it konked it on the edge of a green in which I opened the cap I smelt the petrol and he started running.
I dragged it back off the surround into the long rough and drained the tank into trays and put a jerry of diesel in it while explaining what was happening to about 40 members.
After priming about 10 ltrs through it to try and limit anymore petrol from the system I started it and the only damage was it needed a tappet adjustment so far.
It only has diesel written on the machine next to the filler, and on the cap and the pumps are bright yellow for petrol and green for diesel which is also very clearly marked and 2m apart.
He also had had to read the operators manual before being signed off on using the machine and had been clearly told by myself and the OH&S officer that it was a diesel.
Stupidity comes in all shapes and sizes.
this isnt a realy problem in old school mechanical injected engines...
the new stuff with the extra high pressure injectors however...
(shudder)
its a bit like running an F1 engine without oil...

tank drained, new filters etc problem fixed.
some people just work in auto mode at servo's
getting what they always get, not reading and so on, so all the signs in the world are not going to make any diference.
