Are we talking V8 petrol or the new V8 diesel 200 series??
If petrol I have not heard any bad reports about these and have driven a few. They are and I know its blasphemy a nice vehicle to drive, so much better than the diesel slug (100 series).
Have not heard of any popping engines down this way.
    Cheers

    New V8 70series, I've heard of 3, 2 stoppages and 1 dead motor

As much as I dont like the wayne kerr 1 eyed opinion of either Land rover OR toyota owners, I know one of my old man's work mates hunting party, have BACKTRADED there V8 70 series, on a 79 series 1HT-FTE, which are fantastic motors

I have heard of this too - read it on one of the 4x4 forums a month or so ago. But no further information - presumably Toyota fixed it up quickly and quietly to stop negative press from getting out. It'll be the single turbo V8 as employed in the old new 76 series 4 door wagon and the new Troopie, but not the twin turbo motor, as that is only just out in the 200 Series Cruiser.

I was told by a local cocky that the new V8 diesel is a converted petrol motor and that he knew some who'd had troubles.

(Please note: I cannot vouch for the veracity of this version of the motor's origins as I am not versed in the engineering aspects of such - 'Tis merely heresay I am more than happy to circulate)
