    Disco differences 99-00-01-02

I think I might be narrowing down my search criteria a bit...

What I think I want to spend on a truck now, around $18-$22k, on a 2.5 Turbo Diesel LR looks like it puts me in the 1999 to 2002 range depending on K's, model (luxury level) and aftermarket gear. Once again I need a 7 seater, auto.

In the Discovery D2 range, over these years is there a particular year that stands out for standard included gear, quality, problems etc.

What year would you pick and why?

The later in that range of years, the better.

'98 was when the TD5 was released as a new engine together with a completely new body shell & drive train. Obviously, a new engine like that will have some teething troubles, so the later the vehicle, the better your chances of having something more refined. That said, most of the problems should have been fixed as warranty work or by the previous owners.

Anything with a TD5 Auto is what you want... That combination is almost bomb proof.

If looking to abuse her off-road too & do a trip, personally, I'd avoid the top end cars with ACE & rear air springs. It makes for an easier car to maintain as well as reducing the weight (therefore increasing your payload capacity).

One thing to check is when the centre diff lock was removed........I think they first took the lever away (cheap to get up and running) than the internals (a bit more involved

    Hi Ashes
TD5,unless you like buying petrol/gas.On gas the V8 may be a better choice,TD5s are a bit iffy.
ACE for sure, they handle so well drive a ACE/non Ace hard thru a round about, you will love the difference!!!
Look into the CDL issue if you do harder than NORMAL off roading, with no CDL/Standard Traction control they are a very capable vehicle, the ability to lock the CDL(custom mod on most except the last of the D2s)

If it doesn't have the CDL in place (there was about 6 months where the whole thing was removed... I got one), bank on spending at least $1500 to get one put in....more of you want the LR linkages.
That said, I've been on trips with 'locked' Disco's and been more than able to keep up in almost every circumstance..... believe it or not, my unocked Td5 out did a locked one in the Vic desert country!

I believe the 2000 model was the last with the internals for the CDL.

I'm a beginner so assume low/medium off roading, nothing massively difficult. Most of you mentioned the CDL. Am I realistically likely to need to engage it?

Is the ACE the "Active Ride" mentioned in redbook? eg. on the 2000 01MY ES Td5 Wagon 7st 4dr Auto 4sp 4x4 2.5DT?

My '01 will cost me about $900 to have a factory CDL lever in place - mine has the internals...still good value inmy book.

Ahses, Not sure exactly what the handbook says, but ACE is hydraulic stiffening of the roll bars, front and back. Pump runs off the drive belt, and certain sensors (gyroscopes ??) sense lateral acceleration and stiffens the bar to suit. I wish my D2 had ACE! However with the fair bit of off road travel, the less computerised hardware the better.

CDL - Centre Diff Lock. Traditionally operated by the Hi-Lo Ratio lever but was not included on the D2 (although most of the transfer boxs included the bits needed). The way the Disco was designed, the traction control does the job of the CDL.

ACE - Active Corner Enhancement. Hydraulic rams operate to stiffen the suspension which helps with the on-road handling.
