Conservatives were in power for 11 years, IMO did a good job overall and ensured those that wanted to work could, and could be successful...but did sod all for health, education, transport, etc. as you'd expect. Rich got richer, hard workers were rewarded, lazy and poor got enough to survive. After 10 years of power they got arrogant, corrupt and worse than useless...so the electorate voted them out in favour of Labour to "teach them a lesson".
First 4-5 years, no real change....then, feet under the table, second election win, country stealth taxed to oblivion, public spend through the roof, immigration a joke, lazy rewarded, hard workers and high earners taxed to hell - but money wasted rather than re-invested to fix the problems. Oh, health education etc. had loads spent, but all on administrative management and private "think tanks" rather than on doctors, nurses and teachers...so worse than the previous government. The whole lot of them (Especially after their third win - and heaven knows who could have been dumb enough to vote them in again - that was when and why I left the UK!!) are utterly useless and worse than the conservatives that were voted out.
Now, much as I dislike Mr Howard for some of the things he's done (I'm a shooter, and the money wasting and ineffective way my fellow shooters were persecuted with no benefit to the public who financed it all those years ago was inexcusable just because he doesn't like guns), and much as I think fighting an election campaign saying you won't serve the term before handing over to an unelected colleague is hardly the smartest way to go about things, you are in the main getting the devil you know.
Anyone with views anywhere to the left of my far right ones will doubtless disagree with everything above, which is fine, that's politics...but, like I say, I'm glad I don't have to choose. There is no right answer, only less wrong ones. All IMHO, of course! :(
