Forget about resale, If you drive and maintain a LR properly you will never need another anyway so it doesnt matter about resale.
Up until the D2, they are pretty much fully rebuildable for much less than what a change over would cost anyway and then you can build what you want.

Normally with cars, resale is down the list on my priorities. Fit for purpose and within means $ wise head the list.
Purchasing my first 4x4 is a bit different as I'm pretty sure the first one won't be a long term keeper. The 2nd or 3rd could be. The first one will pretty much be used to gain experience and get be better informed on what I really need. If I do get lucky it could be a keeper so I guess, never say never.
It would be pretty easy to go out tomorrow and pick up a good used 4x4. There are plenty on the market. Just want to make sure what I do pick up is reasonably desirable to the general population so I can relatively easily pass it on without dropping huge $'s.
I ran my D2 Manual V8 for years in an out to Brisbane from the birbs - 28k each way. Out of peak hour mostly, but still with traffic and some peak hour I averaged 15.5 litres per 100k - so perhaps the manual 5 speed makes a positive difference. Have been on LPG for over a year now (about $3k for a computer controlled lambda closed loop system - 3 small scuba tanks in the rear only about 230mm high and still leaves all the side pocket room and plenty of room on top). I get 300k from each tank on LPG and it drives nicely - computer controlled main gas and idle solenoids - not vapour injection but its a great unit. I now get 20litires/100k in same conditions and quite a bit more peak hour - plenty of torque down low on gas - very smooth; more on both counts than injected petrol. That equates to less than 10l/100k on a cost basis with petrol and even less compared to Premium or Diesel.
I have a 95 D1 on LPG and it gets about 25l/100k, but its not computer controlled, its auto and my wife flogs it.
The V8s are brilliant motors - and dont get valve seat regression apparently.
Their torque is good off idle on petrol but enhanced on LPG. I bought my 95 4.5 years ago already gassed. Now that the Govt gives re-bates, its not such an issue if you fit it yourself. You then have amazing range also between LPG and petrol.
The V8s put up very high miles with their chrome bores. For my money I would go a LPGd V8 any day and reap the benefits of poor perception.
I have owned my D2 since new in 02 (then again I cant complain because it was $42,500 on road with upgraded factory sound system which is a beauty and LR inch mag wheels - ie same as SE - mines the S so it had steels as standard - at the time the GXL cruiser for example was about $20k dearer) and i dont like the poor resale, but then again it worked to my advantage with the 95 second hand. All prestige type marks loose value quickly.
I reckon that ignorance is the issue with many people steering clear of LR and those of us smart enough to do the research and talk to actual owners then pick up bargains.
The D3 does not seem to be devaluaing as much - perhaps the fact that its reaping all the Awards worldwide is causing its value to stay up a bit.

We bought a 97 V8 D1 SE a couple of months back. Its our 1st 4wd of any kind and for the money (under $10k) you cannot beat the value. Toyota or Nissan age equivalents - forget it.
If your like me and just starting out, I dont reckon you can beat the value of a Disco for getting a refined, youngish, low kms, 4wd to cut your teeth on. In 2 or 3 years my Disco will still have less then 160k kms on it, it wont be worth much, but it wont have cost me much either. There is a few dead-set bargains out there (V8s) - LPG anyone?
I would go the v8 disco 1 you can pick them up really cheap possably $5000 already on gas.That leaves you $15000 in your pocket for driver training and recovery gear any accessories you want and when you sell it in 12-18 months you will still get close to what you paid for it.(take accessories off)If you happen to dent it in the learning experience(most likely)it doesnt matter as much.They are very capable 4wd's add some suspension and good tyres and bye bye toyota and nissan:wasntme:
