My first time out.

You definately aren't the only person to do that!
But it's good when you come out, you know you bought the right car.
You should join a club or group of enthusiasts because that is the best way to learn. The car is probably capable of much more than you think.

I did it on the Bridle Track a while back. I knew there were ruins in the hills and went looking for them. I'd had a quick look at the track up the hill a few months earlier and thought "The fenda can do that easily"
I didn't even let the tyres down.
Now a Defender can take you into a lot of places, add a rear diff lock and it is near unstoppable. NEAR unstoppable!!
You can get yourself much further into trouble in such a vehicle.
Luckily I was able to feed it when needed and ease it when needed and got up the hill. The thought of reversing was quite scary!
When I got to the top I forgot about the ruins and set about finding an easier way down.
I've been 4wding for years and know better!

going out by your self isnt all that bad if you know you can be self recovered/sufficent.
try and find some like minded 4x4 owners and or do a offroad driving coarse for the finer points, then have fun.

just rember your fender will get you into more trouble than you can imagine;) if its anything like mine you wont want to get out of it and i'll turn around in a bit, you know just over the next hill:angel:

That's my philosophy too... I'm quite happy to go out on my own as I have my stove and soup under the passenger seat until someone rocks up:D:D

Got a hand winch buts its a POFS and an electric winch but its not installed:p been like that for 2.5 years.

I bogged my IIA down to its diffs in a seemingly innocent looking patch of swampy ground. The effective pull on the hand winch is 1 metre, using a pulley makes this a laughable 50 cm... It's also hard work and I broke so many "split pins" in the process, must be some sort of shear mechanism, that it isn't reliable enough. It also seized to kingdom come a few days later after ingress of minute amounts of dirt - never again have I bothered to pack it or rely on it.

I am adverse to spending money on a winch bar, so I think one of those frames for winches that go into the tow hitch or front recovery points may be the way to go.

Aaron, I reckon it would be fair to say you did nothing that the rest of us have not done ourselves (and yep somebody will take me to task over that generalisation).

Sorry. What i meant was, driving through the track i was getting brushed by branches etc. Id have felt horrible had i been in the highly polished D2 i wanted.
