    Air filters in Australia

Currently I am running a K & N filter in the 110 300 TDi. Have recently read some posts on UK forums that the K & N are not as efficient at removing small particles as the traditional paper filters especially in desert situations.

Since hope to have the 110 in Australia in 08 and hopefully do some of your desert tracks, so what is the recommended air filter in Australia?

    Paper, K & N or something else?

    Regards

    Brendan

    re air filters

    Hi brendan
I just use the standard filter and tap it out gently on a flat surface daily (when in the desert). I always carry a spare. (Don' drive to close to the vehicle in front).
Do you have a snorkel? They are not only good for water, but can give you access to slightly cleaner air in some situations.
Don't come to our deset areas during our summer, heaps of dust, heat and flies.

K&N are guaranteed for 1 million miles for a reason, I run one in my Disco & have had no problems.

If your using a snorkel you can get one of the pre-cleaners which fits over the snorkel BUT it means you generally need to push the vehicle a bit less as I am led to believe it can restrict air flow slightly. they cost under 50 bucks from memory. And are simple to fit.

you obviously haven't seen or read any of the threads on K&N's in the tech section.
Do a search, you may revise your opinion.

you missed the part where there is NO problem, fitted correctly they are fine.

Uni Filter is what I use on my bike in worse conditions than in the fourby & have never had so much as a speck of dust past it either.

how do you know that it's filtering OK ?
Looking down the air intake ?
    Tells you nothing.

Based on used oil analysis our silicone levels (dirt) climbed using a K&N on the Defender. Went back to paper and they dropped back to normal.

Stay tuned to the Tech forum as isuzurover should be posting the results of back to back testing between K&N, Donaldson and Coopers 300Tdi Defender filters, K&N 300Tdi Disco and V8 RRC.
On the fine dust test Ben had to double check he was feeding the test media in the right side of the filter as the particle size hardly changed.
    Don't believe the marketing.

BTW, they were my filters of choice on race engines, proved in dyno testing but I was only interested in maximum power/torque then and the engines were re-built every 1500-2000km.

I Use an ITG filter. Available loacally where you are Brendan. I found them superior to paper & K&N. Air pressure drop is more consistant & the 3 stage gauze is field servicable - weekly if required in high dust environs

I would do same as rangy01 if travelling in desert as precaution if unsure & carry a few spares. Cooper paper elements are widely available here.

As an oil analyst for this type of trip I would advise to service & change all oils pre trip as part of your prep as you would do normally. & post trip to ensure you remove the no1 wear culprit - silica ie dirt. Run 1000kms & drop the oil & change again. Oil's cheap. Flushing the silica out will ensure engine & component longevity more so than an air filter sitting there for 10000km struggling to keep dirt out.

Besides the Lbs strong, spend a few bucks here & enjoy our fair land & offerings. All the best in your pursuits.

    Cheers

Where does one get an oil analysis done?
