    Letter of Resignation......

Took the plunge today and resigned from my well paid, full time employed job.
Yep, finally got fed up working my **** off to make others heaps of money and decided to give it a go and see if i can make a success out of working for myself. Don't get me wrong though, i'm nervous about not having that regular paycheck but hey, in times of 4% unemployment i figure i should be able to get another job if it all goes pear shaped..........i hope.

So as of 22nd December i get a modified Disco 2 as my not so new work vehicle

    Thumbs up

Good on ya Phill. I did the same about 2 weeks ago and am now enjoying doing nothing until sometime after Christmas. Well - "nothing" so far has included cleaning out my shed plus a whole range of other jobs that the wife wants done.

But even with all that, I'm definitely feeling a lot more relaxed no longer working for a large South African owned mining company which expects everything and offers very little in return.

Haven't decided what to do next yet, but as you say, no shortage of work around at the moment. I've already knocked back two offers so far.

    Cheers ............... BM

I'm going to be a subby for a while and see how things work out, the company i work for now have said they will continue to use my services and we have "agreed" on some set rates to do certain work. All looks good on paper but we'll see how it goes in practice.

A work colleague told me it was always his ambition to be in a position to send a telegram to our employer saying, "Get f*****. Rude letter following."
I trust you were a bit more diplomatic than that.

Some sorts of qualifications always seem to be in demand.
My brother as an electrical engineer seemed to be able to pick up work wherever he went. My son with a degree in science had to work at a number of different jobs before he landed one in his field of expertise.

Good luck. Working for yourself can be very hard work, as my daughter discovered.

Well done! I did that over 8 years ago. Haven't looked back since. Then I had an XY Falcon, now I've got a D3!

I was really nervous too, but quite relaxed at the same time.

I made the same move when interest rates were at there peak, at the point of being bankrupt it was have faith in my ability or go down the tube on a fixed income. Seems like a life time ago now, worked bloody hard for a few years and got the finances on a even keel again with a lot of ups and downs along the way. Havnt made my forture but at 46 I am semi retired (bloody tired) working about 20hrs a week for moderate income that serves my needs but the biggest bonus is I have a life style I want. Hope you achieve what you seek in self employment
    cheers

I service and install commercial/ industrial doors, gates, boom gates etc. Pretty much anything that opens and closes. It still amazes me how much people take 'em for granted, untill they stop working and suddenly your business can't trade or you've got people stuck in a carpark on a friday arvo

    Congrats Phil, I envy you.

I've had the same thought rattling around inside my head for 5 years since being made redundant after 11 years of slavish good service. Sick of working for liars, thieves, bottom-holes (no swearing allowed) and megalomaniacs.

Problem is I don't really have a clue as to what to do.

I'm an electrician (a long time ago), spent many years in engineering and project management in automation, but the last 8 years I've really been doing mid to senior level Ops management.

Maybe this subject would make a good thread all by itself?
