My dad was only 5 or 6 in Malta when the Italians started bombing. He would tell me that their hearts weren't in it. the either dropped bombs from a great height, or would drop them into the sea. the Germans were more dedicated to their cause though. apparently twice the weight of bombs were dropped on malta than on england. amazing considering it is such a small island. they could not take the island though (though they probably would have if they used ships).
He died last year at the age of 71, something more evil than the Nazis got him, C.....
Sorry to hear about your dad.

More bombs were dropped on Malta that any other place during the war.

The Italian people never wanted to fight against the allies but the average italian was scared of Mussolini.

Heres some more facts relating to the original question.

Even though the dutch were commonly accepted as being conquered by the Germans, more Dutch VOLUNTEERED to fight in the German army than any other country and more jews were sent to the gas chambers from Holland than any other country.

Yet at the same time, In Denmark, the Germans ordered that from the following day, all jewish Danes must wear a yellow star of David on their cloths. On the following day all jewish Danes had the star of David on their cloths, as did every Christian Dane, including the King and Queen.

    That stuffed the Germans.

Actually Kong Kristian had the yellow star sewn on his clothes and said he would wear any insignia any of his loyal subjects were directed to wear by the occupying force and directed all Danes to do the same. Virtually all followed suit. Danes are about the most tolerant people on this earth, and have almost no religious or ethnic discrimination. Kongen had the habit of going for a morning walk in downtown Kobnhavn, all dressed up in a three piece suit, homburg hat, and walking stick. The Germans decided to enforce the appearance of occupation and demanded that Kongen be escorted "for his own safety" by a formal SS guard. Kongen informed them that he had a guard of 3,000,000 Danes and an escort was not required, but the Germans insisted. Next morning a full dress uniform guard of black SS was assembled outside Amalienborg to escort Kongen, only to find that Kongen that morning decided to go for a ride on a horse and the SS Guard had to sprint after Kongen on his horse. They did not try this again. Almost all Danes of the Jewish faith were removed across the sound to Sweden by the resistance. Danes of that generation still totally dislike Germans and tend to do things like saying " that happened the same week we beat the bastard Germans at soccer".

How different would be the World be, if that had happened.
That's precisely the deal the Japanese offered MacArthur, and he accepted. 40 years of Cold War against Communism followed.

How different the world might be if he DECLINED.

Mao killed more than Stalin and Hitler put together (an estimated 70million+ chinese).

Stalin was reputely stunned when Hitler turned on him. He supposedly wouldn't listen to advisers when they told him not to trust Hitler.

Stalin also kept his best troops behind the main force, so they could kill anyone who tried to run.

An interesting fact is that when germany invaded France, the french merchant fleet did what the french do best in war and sat in harbour and handed over their ships. The Norwegians (who had the biggest merchant fleet in the world at the time) saw the germans coming and set sail for england.
More than a Million French soldiers never fired a shot in defence of their country, Regards Frank.

My brother lived in Denmark for several years in the seventies - he commented to me that the foreign language learnt at school by Danes educated prewar or during the war was German - those educated after the war usually learnt English (in addition almost all learnt at least one other Scandinavian language).

John, nowadays and for some considerable time past, all Danes study English from Year1, and either German or French. Don't expect the average blue collar Dane to still have any English years after leaving school, just like our high school other language studies. Those who are employed in tourism, on the sea, or in aero businesses and international trade usually do speak good English and often a few other languages as well. The only Scandinavian language they would really need to study is Finnish which is a Turko-Ugric language like Magyar. The other Scandinavian languages, Swedish, Friesian (Frasch), both Norwegian variants (Landsmal & Rigsmal), Faroese dialect, are all variants of each other from the North Germanic languages group which includes English, Dutch, German, Flemish as well. Icelandic, which is Old Norse, is a bit of a trick but they can probably understand each other.

It is a fact that Germans are quite disliked by Danes though time is taking the edge of what was once intense hatred.
