"This is a replica of the bike used by Steve McQueen in the Great Escape and was built for the Imperial War Museum in London for their 'Great Escapes' exhibition 2005/6.

Like the original, it is based on a 1960 to 62 Triumph. In this case, a 1961 T110. It uses the correct full width hub (unlike the original movie version, although the backup version had the full width hub) and a 4 gallon tank, not the three gallon tank used originally

Welcome to the world of rivet counting"

Apparently in the movie Steve McQueen (or his stunt double) took off on one model bike and landed on another model bike ... but you only know if count the rivets

Mmmm not quite true, Steve McQueen rode the chasing bikes as well in the movie, because the stunt riders couldn't ride as fast as Steve

Grant, what about the twin down tube of the frame, is this because it's not a 650 frame or it's because it's not an early triumph frame, or is it's because it's a 500 Datona frame??

    Cheers Baz.

    I am advised ....

"All 650 triumphs (T110, Thunderbird, Trophy and Bonneville) from 1960 to 1962 used the twin down tube, or duplex, frame. See the attached photo from about the same angle of my 1961 T120 Bonneville.

    My error, the replica is made from a 1960 T110, not a 1961 T100"

    ... and here's Pete's, from the same angle ...

I had a Panther 500cc sloper, you quickly learnt to ALWAYS retard the spark before trying to kickstart. The art was to jump down onto the kickstarter from about a foot above it and always land with the lever on the ball of your foot, never in the arch. Retarding the spark avoided being pelted over the handlebars and using the correct part of the foot minimised the occurrence of broken bones.
Ahhh! those were the days...am i showing my age ?

wtf is it with landrover guys and BMW's...... dad had a '78 SIII SWB petrol with virtually everything he could find for it (at least 2 of the PTO's IIRC), sold it in the late 80's and now has 2 BMW's, an ex UK police R100RS and a R65LS..... one kawasaki, a 454LTD, and the one that scares me...... a Suzuki TL1000S
