Our EBII strated overheating when it was 5 years old.
Took it to a radiator guy who asked if the radiator had been removed and flushed. I said no and he remarked, "Therefore the bottom of the radiator will be full of casting sand". And yes it was. A simple flush and no more problems :-)

The AUIII never even gets half way on the scale, even when towing the caravan at 100kph in 30 degree heat.
Yep, that's what I was told. Something to do with the path through the block being torturous and so they could never get all the sand out in production!

    Got my licence in 1997,

    -1977 Range Rover

-1970 Holden HG Premier sedan 173 - front bench reclinced to become a double bed, AKA, 'The Mobile Fornacatorium' , last heard Kate Langbrook's husband owned it. My email address for many years was htmonaro@hotmail.com, only because hkmonaro was already taken.

-1978 Holden HZ Premier 253 V8 wagon, good car, should have bought a pano (panel van) instead. For the only reason of being able to say I once owned a panel van.

    - 1985 Ford Falcon LTD, digital dash, Premium 'triple stack stereo' oh yeh! electric everything, more options than most cars today. Sadly stolen.

    - 1999 Ford Falcon XH Longreach 1 tonne ute. Awesome ute, drove beautifully, 170km/ph on the Strzelecki Track, 195km/ph over cattle grids when back on the bitumen between Lyndhurst and Leigh Creek. Oh the stupid things you do when you're 21.

    - 2000 LR Defender 130 Crewcab, 25500kms in 3 months, went around Aus, Cape York, The Kimberley etc... best touring vehicle. Did 80 000kms in it, only probs was 4 clutch master cylinders and usual wear and tear items

    - 1999 LR Discovery series 2, Td5 auto, chipped, bigger intercooler, it flys, heaps and heaps of power, tows brilliantly, love the auto, love the cruise control, only had it for 10 000kms so far, no problems yet! (one reason for selling the 130 was no SRS Airbags and better roll over protection in the Disco)

    cheers Ben

I have been told a different story which I believe to be more accurate.

The coolant that Ford used to use was high in silicates (essentially sand).
In the older engines (XF and older) it was not a drama. When they modified that basic pushrod engine to OHC, there were localised hotspots in the cooling system that would leach the silicates out of the coolant into a solid (sand) form.

This would then end up in the radiator and because the tubes were such a small diameter, blockages would occur.

Ford eventually changed the composition of the genuine coolant and removed the silicates. Any Japanese spec coolant already had no silicates and it would solve the problem.

I used to work at a Ford dealership and the mechanics there said they would sometimes have the radiator out of the same vehicle on a 12 month basis, getting an envelope full of sand out each time.

There is no way that much casting sand could possibly have been left inside the block when it was made.
