Ladies - Do you get abused driving the Fender?

We are in between runabout cars and my wife has been using the Fender for the last couple of days. Every night she comes up with these "I got abused in woolies" stories about how people have abused her for driving a big 4wd around with the kids. Obviously our fender looks pretty cool (IMHO) but in many peoples eyes is a typical nasty big 4wd.

Now of course this doesn't happen when I'm around so I wonder how widespread it is?

I get that and Im no lady but most of the time they shut up when I quip "in the event of your plastic box and my steel box being involved in a prang whose child will be safer" they tend to look like they just had the wind let out of their sails follow that up with "in addition to the robustness of the vehicle sitting up where I sit I can usually see an additional 300m in all directions past where you can see so I get extra time to avoid idiots in little cars."

when they come up with "but you have such poor visability" I just offer them a chance to sit in the drivers seat.

the top 5 comments after that are

"but you can see so much from there"
"thats easy to get into isnt it"
"looks like you can fit a lot in the back"
"hey I can see things I cant see from my car"
"are all 4 wheels drives like this?"

    No problems in Albany Creek.
It has the highest registration ratio per person, of 4WD's in Brisbane.

After a few years of being p***ed off by not being able to see around them, I joined the crowd

I find women driving Defenders quite attractive.

And I've read similar comments from motoring jurnos.

So this abuse takes me by surprise.

I normally have a very long response to such ignorance, dealing with :
    • vehicle longevity
    • safety (also common misconceptions)
    • versatility
    • environmental impact
    • economy

after which I'm asked why all this isn't common knowledge.

In a Defender I would be mentioning the road footprint - physically no bigger than a "medium" wagon like a Camry - and the 2.5l diesel using less fuel than a Camry as well. When I first bought the Stage 1 I compared it to the Subaru Forester I then had - same width and weight and only about 30cm longer. Of course the carb V8 was a lot less efficient but that's been fixed with the newer diesels. No-one has ever chipped me for driving a 4wd.

Wife drives the Defender all the time, never had a problem.

She does also have several black belts in martial arts, so I wouldn't mess with her. That might make people think twice.

I had a count up the other day and every 2nd car on the road is a 4WD where I live! Mis-informed environmentalist do-gooders would probably get shot if they started spouting off in our local supermarket carpark!

My girlfreind gets a fair bit of attention in my D90 over here, and in England before we brought it over. Never had any abuse though. I do get her to drive it with the doors locked but thats just for general security.
