    smart meter electricity?

HI all, I was listening to the radio on this issue just as the electrician knocked on my door to install the new "smart meter" for the electricity. As we will all have one within the next 12-18 months I thought I might post it up here for some response.

I'm not sure if many of you know about it but I was wondering what people know about it and opinions on it.

I refer you to some good basic info.
    EnergyAustralia - Frequently Asked Questions

I don't understand it all but I do understand they are trying to make a substantial amount of money out of us. I know one person who had a bill go from $450 to $625 for the same amount of electricity used. And I heard many people speak about it on the radio who had quite negative situations arise from its installation.

Can I just make it clear that the elec companies are not telling most people about there intention to install these AND are not telling people when they are installed though they will make a huge difference to power usage.

There is a potential to save money with this new system but I'm not sure how realistic it is.

After I call the integral or origin to find out more tomorrow I might post more in frustration.

    The potential is definately there.

Its based on off peak usage...

Currently they give a "ratio" of off-peak vs peak electricity

With the new meter if you do the washing at 10pm it will know you were using power at 10pm and charge the night rate

Depending on what structure your state is adopting there are several rates...

    3 am is cheaper again

    Lunchtime is not!!!

And in this modern world, we should ALL pay for our excesses!!! I'm as guilty as anyone (more so in some cases) and user pays is the way to go

Yep we had one in Kambalda. Frigging marvellous doing washing etc at 2am to save money.
Biggest con in Australia and they want you to pay more cause they have not kept infrastructure in line with growth.

Get used to it, you have no choice, we'll all have them within a few years.

We can't (and soon won't be allowed to) keep building coal fired power stations just to cover the peak loads generated by our cheap air cons, etc.

Its a user pays scenario where you pay for usage (kWhr) and demand peaks(kW). Industry have been on these sorts of tariffs for decades.

Yes, I was up an hour early just to get the washing machine and dishwasher through this morning.

I'm going to try work out how to do it well but it won't be easy. Especially with night shifts. I don't have an a/c so I guess I'm saved there. I will get mains gas installed though.

But in reiterating the thing that really peeved me- They installed a machine without telling any one in my street and I assume the vast majority of people were never told. And this machine is one that can ultimately have a huge effect on our life (hip pocket). So it is a bit rich that a company would say they are going it to change the way we use electricity if they ain't even going to tell us it is installed. Until we get the first bill which may cost several hundred extra I guess we may never know it is in because I for one don't go out and look insisde the meter box.

I like my current meter with its simple on and off time for off peak usage. I'm resigned to the fact that smart meters are coming but it is enough to tip the scales in the favour of natural gas for hot water.
The introduction of these meters has more to do with extracting more money from the customer base and less to do with saving the planet.
As for the argument that this will decrease the need to build more power stations that's probably a furphy as well as Industry uses far more power than residential anyway and will pay the costs necessary.

    Yes your right... LMAO

Big business will pay, and then get priority

We have our own power generation at work, and still consume over 40% of the SA grids generation.... (over the fence)

We as a country have had it easy for decades.... Not as much as the USA but similar vein...

We cant continue to do what we do..... Get used to the changes....

If you dont like it here, feel free to browse other nations and their pricing policies for major services

its just the greed engineers way of making more money for the energy companies.......

and a clever way it is too.......they are probably charging more for electricity during the day when its most required.......
by everyone......including mainly businesses.......to run office lights and computers....copiers....printers.....AIR CONDITIONING.......escalators.....
    elevators......

im sure you get the idea........

you have no choice but to use the energy during the day........

at night....when most people are sleeping......the energy companies arent making much money........
so they plan to sell more energy by forcing the households to run their electrical equipment during this time........

all this means......is that there will always be some sort of constant humming background noise all through the night......

then.....at 2:30 in the morning....your next door neighbour will start to vacuum the house to save money........
while the other neighbour is running their dishwasher and washing machine......
while they blow dry their hair at the same time.........

this also means.....they will have their lights on.......
and my pool pump will be running all night instead of during the day.......

do you think there will be less rest......and more stress......?
as if 7 day trading wasnt bad enough.......
