My first (on road) car was a VW utility - payload of 1 tonne, 36BHP. My first company car was an EK holden with Hydramatic transmission. Its performance made my Series 1 look like a high performer.

I also think that you need to be very specific if you wave a courtesy acknowledgment, in that you make it very clear it's a wave & not a finger. Maybe smile at the same time. Don't ask.;)
Blowing the horn as a warning device also can be fraught with danger, as it can be taken as an affront & get up someone's nose.
I agree attitude of drivers young and old is the main problem and agree that you can't legislate for common sense.
I believe in the car crushing punishment, it is a major loss to the hip pocket and ego of clowns whose actions deserve this punishment. Also insurance companies in the future will steer clear of these people, another punishment.
Numpties Missus: if your car is stolen, driven recklessly (aren't all stolen cars?)
and the perpetrator is caught. There is no way your car will be crushed, any insurance will be attended to as per any insurance claim. Would you want it back anyway? (yeah i know some Landies we all would, and we all know that LR chassis would likely best the crusher.) Regardless, the car crushing penalty certainly should not affect any victim in these circumstances.
May I propose a very radical solution: Fistly all newly licensed drivers undergo a mandatory psychological evaluation.
2/ Repeat offenders be issued with a transponder equipped license. The transponder can be tracked 24 hours a day and simply sends a signal containing the drivers details to the State authorities when speed limits are exceeded. The penalties below are simply applied with out the need for any Police pursuits. This can be linked in with existing automated systems which already track trucks, cabs, buses, aircraft and many other vehicles. Alternatively the transponder could be fitted to the vehicle. Or attach a cuff / collar/ bracelet to the offender.(humiliating in public)
If pulled over for any reason and the driver does not have transponder license/ collar or transponder equipped vehicle, apply the following.
If the driver owns the vehicle, crush it and disqualify from driving/ holding a license for 5 years. If they do not own the vehicle, fine $15,000 and disqualified from holding a license for 5 years.
Yes this will offend civil libertarians and sounds complex, yes this could affect all drivers ultimately, but the technology and systems are already in place and would simply require coordination.
Big brother is already snooping and watching in places we dont know about, wouldnt it be good to use it in a way which actually helped society?
Call me CRAZY and an extremist....its just the frustrated thoughts of someone who has had enough.
A little bit of the topic, however isn't it interesting, recently the CSIRO were assisting the NT Government investigate the Ghan level crossing accident. The results of investigations found that with the speed of the train, the truck driver never had a chance of stopping his rig from his first sighting of the train or first being able to see the flashing signals at the side of the tracks.
How many other Truck Vs Train level crossing accidents is this the problem?
It is the same when pulling up to a set of lights, all the cars playing "chicken" pulling into the stopping distance of a heavily laden truck at speed.
Diana
OR.. the government could spend billions with the help of the car companies and have devices on the curbside that broadcast the road speed. All vehicles are fitted out with sensors which pick up this broadcast and ensure that speed is not exceeded.
There. Now nobody would be able to speed, whether they wanted to or not.
:nazilock::wasntme:
Cruise control is the issue. IMO.
people set it then forget.
car keeps going no mater what, takes time to lift foot and brake often to late.
no one is driving they are half asleep.
Michael.
G'da Folks :)
One of the main reasons for the bad manners, road rage, poor skills behind the wheel, is that there have now been 2 generations that have been raised/schooled to believe that the world owes them a living, they were seldom failed at school, just moved through the system, and into the world thinking it is their RIGHT to say, do what they think fit,no respect for the law, or law enforcement, murder is now 3-5 years, it used to be 3 years mandatory for car stealing into juvenile detension if under 16, that worked, now, they had a broken home, parents have drinking/drug problems or they are from some native or ethnic race that lives by different rules, so lets get back to basics and cut the politically correct B----hit and get some law and order back in society
Rant Over
cheers
Perhaps there is also 2 generations of workaholics that are used to working long hours, to tight schedules, and where their lives have developed a lack of tolerance and patience for holdups and inefficiencies. A by product of the world that wants things now and where if you blink, you also miss out.
