If the car is insured and stolen and reported then insurance would cover that.

If car is not insured and in hands of hoon it would have some probability of being written off, so my losss same

Point is people are driving around in cars when not licensed and drunk and being hoons as consequences aren't great enough, they think they ar einvinceable so own death not a factor weighing on their minds and consideration for others not existence as they wouldnt be driving that way in first place if they had any.

So crush the car the consequences high enough that no one would lend them a car and they wouldnt have a car to drive about in.

Crushing would also get rid of some of the crap heaps some of these people drive.

Just on SKY, another 4 persons killed on Vic roads today. What a waste of lives!

Michael your absolutely on the money there. Cruise Controls are incredibly dangerous at times.

WHERE IS THE WARNING NOT TO USE A CRUISE CONTROL IN WET WEATHER?

On a wet road the cruise control adjusts the engine revs even when the tyres are aquaplaneing. Then when grip on the road is regained the car will dart off in which ever direction the tyres are pointing. :(:(:(

Aquaplaning is due to non diligent driving to suit conditions (eg excessive speed, worn tyres) and nothing to do with how the accelerator is applied.

That story going around is fake and incorrect, and has been proven so...

I have never in millions of kms of using cruise control had this issue and I've driven some appalling weather...

I use my cruise rain hail or shine and never feel as tired as I do when driving 'manually'....

In fact, I'm more alert and attentive on cruise after a few hours than the alternative.

Never read the email but have been sitting as a passenger in a car when it happened.

So maybe my experience was a dream! Can you point me to the research that proves it so.

Addit: So far have found very little "reaserch" into the facts. Have found statements from places like RAA in South Aus saying it doesn't happen, and all the myth-buster and urban-legend sites, but no research.

What I experienced (as a passenger) in a relatively new car (Holden Astra 1.8 litre, 18 mths old/35,000 Km - 40 Y/O driver) on good tyres ( Michelin )was: we were traveling along on the freeway from Newcastle to Sydney with the cruise control on when we hit a patch of water running across the road on a right hand curve. When we got to the other side of the water the car took off to the right towards the dead lane, requiring a sudden correction to the left. Was it cruse control ?????

and the perpetrator is caught. There is no way your car will be crushed, any insurance will be attended to as per any insurance claim. Would you want it back anyway? Regardless, the car crushing penalty certainly should not affect any victim in these circumstances.

May I propose a very radical solution: Fistly all newly licensed drivers undergo a mandatory psychological evaluation.
2/ Repeat offenders be issued with a transponder equipped license. The transponder can be tracked 24 hours a day and simply sends a signal containing the drivers details to the State authorities when speed limits are exceeded.The penalties below are simply applied with out the need for any Police pursuits. This can be linked in with existing automated systems which already track trucks, cabs, buses, aircraft and many other vehicles. Alternatively the transponder could be fitted to the vehicle. Or attach a cuff / collar/ bracelet to the offender.(humiliating in public)
If pulled over for any reason and the driver does not have transponder license/ collar or transponder equipped vehicle, apply the following.

If the driver owns the vehicle, crush it and disqualify from driving/ holding a license for 5 years. If they do not own the vehicle, fine $15,000 and disqualified from holding a license for 5 years.

Yes this will offend civil libertarians and sounds complex, yes this could affect all drivers ultimately, but the technology and systems are already in place and would simply require coordination.

Big brother is already snooping and watching in places we dont know about, wouldnt it be good to use it in a way which actually helped society?

Call me CRAZY and an extremist....its just the frustrated thoughts of someone who has had enough.

Vehicle driven by foot hits puddle at 80km/h and aquaplanes...
Too late for driver to respond, vehicle 'out of control'
Traction regained at end of puddle and car grips because wheel turned car goes L or R....

Driver steers to regain control.

Vehicle looses some speed as driver hits brakes.


Now cruise control...
Vehicle driven by Cruise hits puddle at 80km/h and aquaplanes...
Too late for driver to respond, vehicle 'out of control'
Traction regained at end of puddle and car grips because wheel turned car goes L or R....

Driver steers to regain control...

Vehicle speed at most is sustained as cruise uses speed input to control vehicle, vehicle will only accelerate the driven wheels if speed reduced.
In a standard aquaplane scenario this is over in under 1 second so highly unlikely.

Driver, having freaked out over initial loss of control hits the picks and cruise cuts out.....

OR,

speed drops due to HUGE water causing aquaplane and driven wheels attempt to spin up to compensate for speed resulting in overrevving engine and cutting cruise (assuming factory quality unit which reads clutch/RPM inputs)


To relate to your scenario....

1. What vehicle were you in?
2. What tyres, brands, km's on them, age, tread depth
3. Suspension, when were shocks replaced prior?
4. Driver, experience in the wet? Fatigue?
5. How long had it been wet? Fresh rain? Or sustained duration (roads worse at start of rain)
6. Was the cruise factory or aftermarket?
7. What sort of road (curves, hills, freeway, dirt, gravel etc)

Sorry, got to disagree on this; best 3 post WW II inventions- Landies, autotrans & cruise control. I drove over 200,000k last year, probably 180 on cruise. The only way you can make coffee without stopping. (Joke)
