This is a BIG de-markation debate between plastics and orthopods.

    Feet are undoubtedly orthopaedic.

Hands are in the realm of plastics (and reconstructive surgeon) although some orthopaedic surgeons specialise in hands as well. In our Emergency Department (level 6 ED, tertiary referral hospital) hands are only referred to the plastic surgeons.

Which ever specialty you go to make sure they are a hand specialist not a generalist plastics/orthopaedic surgeon.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Stand aside and let the experts in

Whether orthopaedics or plastics depends on where you are - few plastic surgeons in Queensland will touch hands but other states it's the reverse - no-one else will.

I can't speak for anywhere other than my small patch (Toowoomba) but we have an orthopaedic surgeon and a plastic surgeon who do hands.

As for the problem - what's wrong with the hand? In broad terms bones healing with an angle to them isn't a problem, not even in the future. Bones healing with a twist in them (so the fingers cross when you make a fist) IS a problem.

And finally, on the subject of finding a "good" GP - "good" is a personal judgement. ANY GP can make the assessment whether the hand is likely to need surgical work or not. While the work will ultimately be done by a specialist, you need to see a GP first to get your insurance (including Medicare) rebates.

    In future, don't punch things

I used to know a guy that was good at re-breaking bones, this was usually pre-empted by finding your dogs head in your letterbox.

Can you scan me your xrays? I can give you an idea then if you like.

You may even qualify for the new MCP joint replacements. They are terrific to radiograph!

If AULRO is now going to dispense medical advice and I can't see why it shouldn't, I suggest Inc makes up a separate category for it so all the posts can be together.
    I suggest:

    or
    Broke, Like my Landy
    or
    I Need a Bex

    Either way,
Any one here know how to check a prostate? Mine could do with a once over

Just been there, done that. They knock you out so they can jamb a torpedo up your blerter for ultra sound ... then run a needle through the wall and snip off bits of your prostate for biopsy ....

You know that's not what they really do while you're under.

Just feel sorry for the guy in the next bed who has to go in for the gastro-endoscopy after you're done.

    Cheers
    Simon
