Ford XR6 in Flood, Nice bow wave

I no longer go through even shallow water in a car. Many years ago (OK, 1970), Elisabeth and I went through a flooded section of road on our way back to Ceduna after our honeymoon.

When we got to Ceduna, I went back to riding my motorbike and didn't drive the car again for many weeks. When I di, I immediately asked Elisabeth "How long has the diff been screaming?"

She said "What noise?"

I pulled the drain plug but no oil came out. It was a Salisbury on the Viva so I too the rear cover plate off and still no oil came out - and for a good reason, it was like a thick paste. Water and EP90 don't work well together.

That diff was stuffed. The Holden dealer charged an absolute fortune to strip it and rebuild it but it continued to whine (I was only earning about $4500 per annum in those days - including shift penalties and OT).

There were no extended breathers on the Viva diff so it sucked in a gutful of water.

Oh, ours was an HA. :o

I went through 1m deep water in the old AU ute a few years back and because of the shape of the AU it went straight over the roof just going a steady pace enough in my mind to get a bow wave happening.

I got through allright but not being able to see for a few seconds in traffic was a bit daunting.

Another time I went through the old tunnel to access the sheds at Geelong golf club which only looked as though it was about 6" deep but at the other end it was about 600 or 700mm deep which was also a bit of a surprise.

Company cars go anywhere :D

Brings back memories. Many years ago I bought a HA on King Island. A mate had a HB Brabham and rolled it. We put the motor and gearbox from the HB into the HA and I moved to Adelaide not long after that.

Had serious problems keeping diffs in that thing too - for much the same reason as you.

They are not even a tough engine, i just found a knack to do line locks in it............

ahh i even lost my ticket in it............
