Reminds me of a mechanic we had on a field crew in the sixties - very accident prone. One "accident" was doing welding without a shirt - instant sunburn, another was oxy cutting in sandals - had great difficulty removing the sandal when a small offcut (red hot) lodged between two toes. But his prize effort was when he bought a cartridge reloading outfit from a ringer on a staion; the powder was stored in a rusty old treacle tin. He must have forgotten what was in it, and had started using the recessed top of it as an ash tray. Instant beard removal and haircut back to level with his ears. Must have blinked in time because his eyes were undamaged, although he lost his eyebrows and eyelashes. He suffered only mild first degree burns, but his face was black until the skin peeled. Made an interesting pattern as it came away in patches.
I find that I have to wear clothes and boots when using the lathe, and for a lot of other things in the workshop, but the beard does protect your face from flying chips when turning, although when one lands in your beard the smell can be interesting!
