I put my hand up for a beard, trimmed last nite first time in months, starts to get annoying when the hairs of your mo start to curl back around and get caught in your mouth when you eat, missus just flys over the hole lot , hair and beard in one go, besides the longer it all gets grey becomes the dominant color.

I wont have that problem Brian. Whenever I'm on holidays and even days off, I rarely shave.Don't feel dirty and the itch thing has never been a big issue with me.

Know what you mean re welding spatter though I have often in the past had a small welding job at home and had no shirt or shoes on. Quite often, bad sunburn ensues

Reminds me of a mechanic we had on a field crew in the sixties - very accident prone. One "accident" was doing welding without a shirt - instant sunburn, another was oxy cutting in sandals - had great difficulty removing the sandal when a small offcut (red hot) lodged between two toes. But his prize effort was when he bought a cartridge reloading outfit from a ringer on a staion; the powder was stored in a rusty old treacle tin. He must have forgotten what was in it, and had started using the recessed top of it as an ash tray. Instant beard removal and haircut back to level with his ears. Must have blinked in time because his eyes were undamaged, although he lost his eyebrows and eyelashes. He suffered only mild first degree burns, but his face was black until the skin peeled. Made an interesting pattern as it came away in patches.

I find that I have to wear clothes and boots when using the lathe, and for a lot of other things in the workshop, but the beard does protect your face from flying chips when turning, although when one lands in your beard the smell can be interesting!

John, a good thick curly beard is great for holding welding rods, my beard holds 1/2 a dozen, easily, saves having to fiddle around pulling them out of the box, Regards Frank.

I do usually wear long sleeves, trousers, and boots when welding or machining, but occasionally when I just have a little job, then I will break the rules to run a couple of inches of weld or a cut a little bit of metal.

JD, your beard would look a bit battered after taking a 1/4" roughing cut on some stainless using a ceramic insert and not wearing a face mask. The chips come off like white hot rain.

The welding rod holder bit is only an optional extra to the standard features you have outlined above, Regards Frank.

My little lathe would not look at 1/4" roughing cuts on anything.
