    ABC News

"More than 1,600 drivers were caught speeding in Queensland yesterday, with police warning that motorists are still ignoring warnings against speed and alcohol over the holiday season."

just try and do the speed limit throught the gateway bridge tolls and watch the trucks try and run you over. It is a pitty they don't use the money to fix the Qld roads, with those stats our roads should be gold

    Show me the money!

If they have a bad road toll we need more speed enforcement to fix it. If they have a good year it must be the speed enforcement so if we have some more of that we'll be even safer.

It's all just big business $$$$. Apart from stamp duty and rego it's one of the states few ways of making $$$.

Speed limits aren't a secret. Cars are equipped with everything to help keep you within the limit.

I think there is nothing sweeter than getting money from those that choose to go above the limit.

Yep, you're right. If we can stop everyone speeding the road toll will fall to 0 overnight

If the law said you had to get out of your car and lick every power pole before driving on would you do it? I'm damn sure that would save lives as no one would hit power poles anymore because if there was 100% compliance no one could hit them because they have to get out and lick them

I seem to remember a number of well publicised cases in Australia where people were abiding by the posted speed limit but were still booked because the cameras were wrong. There were thousands of them. It affected people lives.

I'm not anti speed limits, I just think they should be part of a balanced strategy. In Australia, they are the strategy.

Now thats a ridiculous Statement :P

As for the power polls. And onto defensive driving.

People hit power polls so often in an accident because when they loose control in the vicinity of power polls/trees/other is because when they are spinning around in circles they keep staring at the object. What the eyes see, the car will follow.

Most people will call bull**** on this, but those in the know will back me up. I do not need to be backed up however, as I know how things happen.

I do not advise anyone to test my theory in the practical sence, though go ahead an make some phone calls to those that are experienced in driving. Ring the police perhaps, believe it or not, they risk their lives everyday to help people, and will be more than willing to give you advise.

Licking polls would give splinters, which means a trip to the hospital.... which means 5 week delays :P

Aaron.. the ABC search isn't working but this link should get you started. There are plenty of other examples but I can't be bothered digging.

As I said I genuinely don't have a problem with speed enforcement. What I have a problem with is it's the only thing that is done. I have my speed checked hundreds of times a year but I can't remember the last licence check, and I think the last breath test for me was around Christmas/new year 2005. I have concluded from this that as long as I don't speed I could pretty much do whatever I want to do.

It is my firm belief speed enforcement has only a minor value to the road safety mix (but it does have some). However I know that it's a huge money earner (I'm not telling how), and is a much bigger income source than they let on.

It is also my firm belief that if it wasn't for the massive improvements in car safety our road toll would be significantly bigger than it is. In QLD stamp duty has just been increased which will reduce (slightly) the take up of newer safer vehicles. IMHO there is any benefit from fixed cameras down the drain.

It continues to stun me that the state governments will spend hundreds of millions of dollars (aus wide) for quite small benefit to public safety when the money could be far better spent educating people about <insert your favourite public health issue (virtually all of them have more merit)> .

I have no issue with the police and think they have very tough jobs. They only implement policy as determined by the government of the day. In QLD they are paid overtime to sit in camera vans (all cameras are only operated by genuine police being pad OT unlike some other states) which I believe was how they bought their silence on the issue.

As to what would actually help...

    • Better roads.
    • Better education.
    • Tougher licencing.
    • Better prevention of genuine problems like fatigue and drug/drink driving.

All of these are revenue negative.

Anyway, that's my take on it. I have a genuine interest in road safety. In 20 years of driving I've only had two tickets, and my last fine was 10 years ago (I haven't been caught since ) so I'm not really a sour grapes speeder. Happy new year
