probably a 79 series RV 'cruiser trayback..... i know i can fit in them, and i know what a turbo'd 75 series with 31" boots can do in the hands of a good driver (put it this way...... they got the lighting towers there by towing them with a D11...... then they expected us to service them!)

Apart from a new LR, there's not a single 4WD on the market that appeals.

If I had to have one, I guess a 4.2 turbo Pootrol - or an early Jeep station/utility wagon:

Depends on the purpose of other 4wd.
I would not buy a Toyota Hilux, they are the biggest POS on the market (we have plenty of them at work) or a standard Diesel 100 Series Cruiser.

I would consider :
A Humer H2
A Nissan Patrol 4.2 TD (No longer available).
A V8 200 Series Cruiser
A F250/350 mainly for carrying loads and bikes etc

For reote travel
A Unimog Camper

Hmm if I had to replace the equivalent of my D3, I would look at either the ML or GL500 with offroad package ( low range, protection, adjustable air suspension) or as mentioned a G Wagon. Thats about it for me, wouldnt consider any of the Jap 4WD's, never owned Jap vehicles, never will. Even though not a direct replacement would be as also stated a 4 door Rubicon as I dont mind the Jeeps,
