Any arty types here?
SWMBO and I are trying to enter our daughter's paintings in a small town art show, according to the leaflet, they need to mounted rather than framed. Can any body tell me the difference?

MOUNTED would mean on a stretcher or similar in a fashion that can be hanged on a wall. Eg.: a canvas painting would have to be on a frame (stretcher), not simply rolled up like a rag... or you could use a canvas board. For other media such as water colours, the paper would need to be mounted on a foam board or similar. In any case, loose paper/canvas would not be accepted.
FRAMED would have an external, additional decoration on the outside of the actual painting which, when it comes to judging, could distract from the painting itself. (as a side note, there were instances in history where the frame was more valuable than the painting... but not in this case I am sure)
Check with the organisers - I am sure they will point you in the right direction.

Mounted usually means either attached to a hard board - the glorified version of glued to something hard so that it can't be easily bent and is easy to view standing up against a wall or easy to hang.
Or mounted can mean sandwiched between two pieces of hard board/card, the top one having a window cut into it so that you can see the picture. This is then usually framed, although not necessarily.
The difference is that the window mounted artwork is sandwiched and so doesn't need to be glued in place, can be taped at the corners, etc. instead.
The first option is usually done with photographs.
You can do a sandwich mount without framing it. Just sticking it to a board stops you from doing anything else to the artwork ever, so goes against most of the art conservation stuff.
Cheers

Thanks heaps for the quick replies, fellas.
Also, I just found out Missus Moose doesn't particularly care much for the term SWMBO. Oops!
