Good luck. The Summer is so far nice and cool which should make for a good trip. It is in Brisbane anyway.
Hi guys - just thought I would check in on the Bris-Perth trip in a 1968 IIA... (some of you may remember an earlier thread).
Well Bris-Syd went almost without incident. The idle on the engine is a bit funny at times and I bent something (in the steering box or the relay) on the first day, so now I get full lock on one side but not the other.
Apart from that everything is going fine. But if anyone in Melbourne or Adelaide has a 2.25D injector pump (or parts) or any steering components, I may be in need!!!
Will keep in touch when I can!

Hi mate ,did lots of miles in my old 2 a deisel and re the steering reckon I'd look seriously at the relay .When that happened to me it locked up and I demolished a large strainer post.Jack up and observethe steering assembly esp down there. That can be b disastrous!4WD Middlebouough Rd Blackburn Sth in melb were able to supply most parts for mine and are most helpful PH 039890 0500,

Are you going via Melb or elswhere?

Have a very careful check of your steering gear! That change in L/R lock could be because one of the arms on the steering relay has skipped a spline, meaning it is either very worn or loose or possibly cracked (In 1965 I drove the last hundred miles or so into Pimba with no steering because of this).
The most likely cause of the funny idle is a slight air leak in the fuel system, probably exacerbated by a nearly blocked filter or the pickup screen in the tank - above idle the suction is enough to ensure full fuel supply.

Good to hear you've got some miles under your belt. Hope you and Bec remembered the ear plugs! Let me know if I can sort anything out for you from here.
Hi all, thanks for the replies.
We climbed mt Koscziusko (sp?) a few days ago, then drove through the nsw/vic alps to melbourne - was a slow trip but great fun, and we managed to do afew 4x4 tracks.
The IIA is still going like a train. The idle issue was just a sticking linkage. The steering hasn't gotten worse despite the 4x4ing. I have checked all the linkages and everything is fine (tight and no skipped splines). I suspect the relay shaft may be twisted, but at this stage will see how it goes. Rear main has a slight leak too... and one of the battery clamps disappeared on the rough roads through the alps.
We are in Melbourne at the moment, but are hearding towards Adelaide tomorrow. Have suffered a staked tyre on our support vehicle (nissan) - but had 2 spares (but only one rim) - changing tyres was fun.
Dave - no we definitely didn't forget the ear plugs (took 2 boxes!!!). They have been very necessary.
In case anyone is interested - we have averaged 11l/100km. Sitting on 90-95km/h on the highway roads.
great stuff...thanks for the update and look forward to the next
Good to see you're still going. And that you remembered the ear plugs!! Any photos yet?
Great stuff! It's a novel way to travel these days, isn't it?
I did a drive in my SIIA from Melbourne up to here in Fitzroy Crossing - via the Tanami - and wore earmuffs the whole time. (I've since added soundproofing.)
I'd be surprised if you could twist the shaft in the relay, given how thick it is.
Did you hit something? It should be easy enough to check, if you haven't already. As I'm sure you know, the top and bottom arms are supposed to be at 90 degrees to each other. Have you jacked up the whole front axle and checked it lock-to-lock? Let us know what you find anyway.
Have fun!
