That day you should have been very happy to cross off "become nominated recovery vehicle" off your to-do list!

This Disco is my fifth Landy since 1962, and its a keeper. I plan to explore the Gunbarrel area with it. This is the only remote area left that I havent
been to and I want to take this old V8.
I have owned other makes of Fourby besides these five and enjoyed them,
done lots of trips and could not fault them.
My first choice has always been a Landrover tho, since I first drove one in the Army in 1959. Love at first sight !
After the little Gunbarrel trip, I want to do one last lap of all the major
outback tracks and deserts and see those spots that had such an influence on me over the years.
Of course, I realise that much of it has been buggered up over the recent
past by red tape, restrictions and hoons etc, and is nothing like it used to be, but I can live with that. Jeez, I might even take a frig !!!
You should have seen the trackless Simpson and Cape York in 1963 and 4.
Thing is, I would like to fit out a V8 Troopy for the big trek. Purely for
its power and factory options and its ability to pull an off road camper
thru any outback track or desert . The Oz wide service and repair network
also is an important consideration.
But ... I am stymied because on principle, as long as those japs are killing Whales, I wont knowingly purchase one of their products.
That is the only way I can protest against what they are doing instead of
just paying lip service to the international condemnation.
So, I have to make another decision with regard to a suitable vehicle.
I reckon its got to be a new Defender after I take the Disco over to
see what our Mate Lennie saw and did.
I reckon the Troopy has been a good truck all these years.
My 1973 Patrol was bullit proof but after about ten years I grew tired of the three speed box and no air con.
I think the 4.2 Turbo diesel Patrol was ( is ) a ripper.
My Disco tho, cripes, its gonna be buried with me.
Cheers.
PS: I still dont know if air lockers can be fitted to the new Deefa ?
Stevo, I reckon you couldn't be any closer to the truth.
Yes, it's all 4wding and that's the basic point, no matter what you drive its a common interest. Even people at the camp ground who might be in a Commodore are "one of us" - they enjoy getting away with the caravan or whatever. There isn't any point arguing which vehicle is best.
I think its important to drive a mile in another vehicle before judging it - or maybe even a couple of thousand. It's silly to be dyed in the wool and refuse to acknowledge that in some regards, Toyotas are better than Rovers or Nissans are better than Jeeps and vice versa.
Just coz I like Landys over the others doesnt mean I am prejudiced, I hate the others all equally!,, Panadol are no good, try a couple of Valium
Never ever under estimate an old Ford Blitz 4x4, for a 60plus year old bit of gear these things are great,
That is a bit of a John Howard saying sorry response, as rightly so its not the Toyota workers that are the killing the whales - just as Mr Howard did not himself displace indigenous people.
The Japanese people during the war arguably committed the most atrocious crimes against humanity, including against Australians (since we are part of humanity after all:D) but in the present - and many veterans would be completing multiple revolutions in their graves - we have security agreements with them and allow them to train on our soil.
Likewise should we never buy Land Rovers, because of British nuclear testing, and the appalling treatment of indigenous people? Or Jeeps and Fords because of the ANZUS alliance which conveniently landed us in Iraq and Afghanistan? Or Hyundais because their country is run by a murderous despot with nuclear ambitions?
Well, since August I now own my second Disco, funny thing is I feel like they (LR) have always been there in my mind since my dad was a Triumph, Rover, LR, Jag salesman from way back and I saw my first Land Rover Game in the lot opposite Winterbottom Faulls in Subiaco (for those that might remember) as a kid.
Buying the D2 felt like coming home.
I have had Nissans, Toyotas, Subarus, Jeeps and Mitsubishis and not one has failed to take me where I wanted to go, or let me down. My respect for my 1988 NG Pajero TD is still strong in my mind - sure it's basic, and the IFS is a pain but it was as reliable as the sunrise and accepted everything I threw at it with good grace. My mate who bought it from me loves it, as do his two young boys and he says to me "did I tell you how much I love my truck? I don't know how I did without it". That for me is enough because there's 3 more people in this world getting out there, having fun and enjoying 4wding.
Before my ex became my ex, I was looking at 100 Series and 4.2 GU's then I had to revise my budget - and despite having to fix all the things the previous owners ignored - I am happy - I am at home in my D2.
But if I get bogged and a Niva pulls me out - I don't care, I will thank 'em just the same, cos that's what it's all about. There will always be the "mine's bigger than yours" brigade, good luck to them...
I like Landies - but I'm not going to put them or anything else on a pedestal. What matters is being out there.
Mike
"Real men" drive -toyotas... or defenders... or D2s ... or patols.... Pansies drive.... subarus, defenders, D3s etc etc" Who cares what others say! Steve you ask a good question. I read this list because I'm a pretty ignorant male wrt things pertaining to Land Rovers and I enjoy reading what others have to contribute.
This is a Land Rover Owner List:
I own a Land Rover - I don't worship it nor never will. This list is not necessarily for worshipers.. (although there are some here - bless their little souls)
I own a Land Rover - but I'm not a mechanic, nor do I want to become one. This list is not 'mechanics only'... (unless you need to be a mechanic to be an owner, in which case there's a nice blue D1 for sale ....).
I own a Land Rover - but am not an enthusiast, but don't decry healthy enthusiasm by others. This list is not exclusive to the enthusiast...
I own a Land Rover - but am not evangelical about converting unbelievers. This list does not require baptism for membership...
I own a Land Rover and am a healthy male. But I know a few women Disco owners -and they definitely are real women.... and this list is not exclusively male (hey NM..)
I own a Land Rover - and have never had so many oil stains on my drive way.
I own a Land Rover - and have never experienced so poor take off at traffic lights.
I own a Land Rover - and hope I never get a breakdown..............
I own a Land Rover - and wonder why my car is the noisiest in the street, even though it has a nice newly rebuilt motor, and all the Toyotas and Nissans (... and D2s) seem to be so quiet.
I own a Land Rover - and have never seen so much soot come from any of my cars tailpipe.
I own a Land Rover - and now realize that the Japs make better quality interiors and electrics.
I own a Land Rover - and have never experienced the roll around corners as in my D1.
I own a Land Rover - and enjoy the ability the LR has off road in reasonable comfort.
I own a Land Rover - and am still married...
I own a Land Rover - maybe I need my head read....
I own a Land Rover - because.... mmmm
One day I may even own a Nissan (never have in over 30 years of motoring) - maybe a 4.2 turbo diesel. For the time being I own and drive a Land Rover.
