G'day Papadad
It maybe worth while asking this question on the Series 1 or the 2/2a forum further down on the sitealso post what model vehicle you have,80-- 86--88 or 107--109
cheers
Hi all,
Ever since I put my 1957 series 1, 88" on the road I've had speedo problems, the other day the cable snapped. The instrument itself is ok. I went to the shop to have a new inner made up and the first thing he wanted to know was how long it had to be. Well how would I know! I don't even know if the correct cable is fitted now.
Does anyone know how long the outer cable should be and how long the inner cable should be?
Regards, Lyle

This is an question on my list too except I need a complete cable, There is a cable you buy on Fleabay that suits the series1 to 3, this good or bad information! Seeing as the speedo heads are similar and the boxes are mostly the same either cable should work, How many people routinely pull the worm out the tube and lube it? they dry out and snap, once in a while the speedo head should be cleaned and ever so gently lightly oiled, be amazed how they go when properly lubed,
The cable is the same from Series 1 to 2a*, but Series 3 is different, being longer and with a different attachment to the speedo. First thing to do is to check what speedo you have - except for the 80", it is possible to fit S3 speedo to a Series 1, and this may well have been done. In this case you need a S3 cable - the extra length is not a problem, except that you need to make sure it cannot contact the exhaust - if it does, it will not last long. The S1/2/2a cable has a screw on connection at the speedo end, the S3 has a clip on connection. The other end is the same right through.
*Cable for the six is longer.
Note that there are, for each model a large number of different speedos - trip/no trip, metric, mph, warning lights or not (changed 1967) and differing for tyre size (actually listing by 88 and 109) plus the six has a higher maximum reading. But this is a separate issue, and does not affect the cable.

I can confirm what John says that the speedo cable for series 1's between 1950 and 1958 are all the same part. The manufacturers part code for the complete S1 cable is "SM A 997" (I don't recognise the manufacturer code SM)
The number changes for the series 2 so is a different part which will be a slight change in length, however if you use a matched pair of inner and outer there is no problem.
In this case it does not affect you, however the 80" up to mid 1950 had the cable exiting the transfer case on the RHS. This cable is shorter and has different fittings at the gearbox end.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Hello Papadad,I put a 2A cable in my 1951 80" and it works perfectly, slightly longer but end fittings are identical
