Should the location field be mandatory

Stealing someone elses thunder from a reply in someone intro post

Theres a lot of members that dont have a location in their profile...

Should this be made mandatory as part of signing in to make meeting the people and helping them out with tech support /locations of suppliers easier....

Assuming its easily achieveable and its wanted enough how should it be done.

A drop down box for your country/state and Im thinking along the lines of a drop down box of australian states then the major other countries with a user typed field under that for the city.

Just a drop box with the country/state

or a single user entry field that they can just type in what they want.

I don't think it is that big a deal, but some types of posts (those looking for a source of help, parts, service etc) are rather frustrating to answer when the first thing you have to do is to try and find out where the original poster is.

I think that in most cases the new poster has simply not filled it out rather than being deliberately coy. Making some sort of a response in this field mandatory would still allow those who want to be coy to do so, (although you have to wonder about their motives) but would get some sort of a location in nearly all cases.

Requiring a correct town in the location is probably unachievable and not much use (where do you find a list of all locations worldwide, and who has heard of 99% of them?), but a state (or Country, if not Australia) would be at least a guide.

I voted, however for a mandatory user filled out box - this allows people to be creative, but gets a location for those who simply haven't bothered in the past.

When ever someone registers for the Rangerovers.net forum, I have to activate them. I usually have to suggest they add their location as it make it easier for us to help them.

I selected suburb/state but I dont think it has to be as precise as that, but maybe a bit closer than just state.

I think Central west NSW, as John has is adequate, if individuals want to get down to the suburb/ street etc then that's their decision.
