Do ponies on a beach attract sharks in the sea? (We got Hoffed)

Yesterday I fulfilled my daughters birthday wish of taking her pony to the beach. First thing was to call up the council and check which beaches around the local area were restricted to horses. I was told unless there was a sign prohibiting the riding of horses on the beach we were allowed to ride. Fair enough, but what to do with myself and my boys whilst the girls were off frollocking with the beasts, we didn't want to just sit there on the sand looking pretty. So the usual dog crap, seaweed and bluebottle infested dog beaches were out. We went to a nice beach where we could enjoy the sun and surf at the same time. Hooked up the float, grabbed the body boards and kids and headed out to a nice beach. When we got there we read all the signage. No Dogs, No motorbikes, No Alcohol. Nothing about horses. Cool. The pony was unloaded tacked up and the boys and I slip, slop, slapped and into the surf we went. We got a few stares, a few hot chickies coming up for a stroke (of the pony that is) etc.. Ten minutes later we got Hoffed.

He didn't run, he galloped, his brown mane and muscular build running straight for us. He was the personification of the great man. And guess what he said

Hoff: "Errrr, this isn't a dog beach".

SWMBO: Good, cause this isn't a dog.

Hoff: We've had a few complaints from some women about your, errr horse.

SWMBO: Why, where miles from anyone. We have a buckett to pick up any crap, and we checked it with the council this morning, and were informed we are allowed to be here.

    Hoff: Errr, ok ,errr thanks.

He then galloped off to save a kite in distress.

    Did we do anything wrong?

A woman, sitting close to the boys and myself started bitching about the irresponsible woman who'll bound to be attracting sharks. I informed her that if she asked very nicely my wife might let her have a ride.

nope in the event of a body boarder and a person on a horse being the only people in a shark infested beach the boarder is the more likely to be taken...

a swimming horse looks nothing like a swimming seal when viewed from below.

Not as far as I know, they attract crocs but never heard of one being knocked by a shark, some people are just petty and should worry more about the cancer they will get from being out in the sun, sounds like you all had fun, good stuff!

A local race horse trainer used to train trotters by towing them behind a 12 foot tinnie in water just deep enough so they had to swim. 20 years ago a great white of + 5 mters took out the hind leg of a horse. It turns out that the scent of a horse is atractive to shark (shark find most of their prey scent and vibration). They didnt swim horses for a long time after that. This happened on the nw coast of tassie.

A 5 meter plus Great White is an awesome creature, truly a magnificent animal just dont annoy one, we used to the see odd one around the the Thomas Playford 1 powerhouse when were in Port Augusta, best snapper ground around, unfortunately in the big White Noahs back yard. I seen a croc take a wild horse having a swim in the Vic River up in the Territory, wasnt much hope for it.

    Nope.
Should have invited her to swim further out than the horse so she would get taken first and save the horse.

Watched a water buffalo get dragged by the head through mud in to the Adelaide River by a large croc once..... you get a real respect for their abilities after that (the crocs that is although I'm sure the buffalo gave it it's best shot!)

But thats the thing, the closest the horse got to the water was paddling in the surf 2 to 3 inches deep tops

Some of you probably have heard stories of the big rogues crocs up in the Territory and we are talking big crocs, bigger the Erwin would ever had had a crack at, two come to mind Old Charlie and the other is Sweetheart, back in the early 70s croc hunting was frowned upon and you did more time for killing a croc then you did for pretty much anything else even worse if you were peddling the skin, anyway old Charlie used to inhabit one of the Rivers just up from us at Timber Creek, cant remember which one it was either Little Horse or Big Horse Creek, old Charlie was harmless he was seeing his last days out he may have been near a 100 year old, most of his teeth were gone and he was gumming the odd barra to death, he used to lay out on the bank of the river all day and fisherman would go about the doings and Old charlie never gave a stuff, one day a pair of morons decided to knock him off, there was plenty of local outrage over this and try as he did Dad could never find the guys who did it but we did here they were knocked off eventually, old Sweetheart was another big girl over 6 meters long she habited the Finnis River up in the Territory, Sweetheart had never to our knowledge taken a human life or attacked a human but she didnt like boats in her part of the woods and would come up from behind and grab the motor by the lower leg and shake the christ out of the boat usually sending fisherman and hundereds of dollars worth or kit into the Finnis, she was doing this for a few years until apparently she was knocked off, she was distinguished by her nose being a wee bit shorten then normal, biting props would have that effect I guess, her head is in one of the Croc farms in Darwin on display, people thought this was the end of Sweetheart, there were a couple of other reports of similar happenings in the same river, so did they get her or not? who knows? we are so lucky we have Great Whites and Crocs in Oz two of natures finest hunter killers, I remember watching a Bush Tuckerman show and old Les Hiddins is floating down among the lillypads in some far norther river in a home made thing, he was sitting in legs dangling in the water and a paddle in one hand, he was waffling on about something and tapped a rather large 44Magnum revolver attached to his waist, even the best do silly things!

but that's the thing Dobbo, there are always those around who decide that for whatever reason, they wouldn't do what you are doing and so decide you shouldn't be doing it either and so make a scene.
I've seen friends get angry over the look of someone else...... it just blew me away.......

The worst you should be worrying about riding on the beach is a tendon in the soft stuff.
