my 130 gets hot under the collar towing the van on hot days
no loss of power though
thought i would take lurch round the block today.......so i hooked up an empty car trailer and took off......
before i got too far......i topped up the tank and worked out the economy at.....13.08 l/100kms
after towing the empty trailer around for just under 500 kms......(yes...its a big block....)
i put a car on it and drove to a sevo and filled up again......checked economy again......13.76 l/100kms.......
not much difference between the two figures........no probs.....
however.....as i was almost finished filling this tank to the top.......i pulled back the nozzle to get it level with the filler
neck so i would have accurate figures.......i noticed the fuel had a yellow colour.......
fantastic.....i thought...i just filled up with bio........
anyhows......i took off.......hit the freeway and couldnt get lurch to go anywhere......
he was struggling to hit 100kmh.......hit a hill and the speed would drop off......
change back to 4th.....and it went worse.....it actually was pulling better in the higher gear.....
just did not make any sense......needless to say......my practically stayed flat on the floor for the next hour or two.......
then.....lurch hiccuped........and as he did.....the temp guage flicked over to red and straight back.......lurch probably thought i hadnt noticed.....
so i pull over and pop the bonnet....all is fine......coolant level is spot on.....
so off we goes again.......he had done this about 4 or 5 times......till this tank was starting to run low......
so i pulled into a servo and topped it up again......this time i checked BEFORE i started pumping and it was the correct colour.....
nice and clear.......
i pulled out of the servo and took off......and boy did i take off......lurch was sitting between 120 and 140 kph all the way home.......
i couldnt believe the difference.......i was overtaking everyone...even up hills and this is with a car on the trailer.......
what was going on......???
i simply put it down to bad fuel......and am sitting here hoping thats all it was.......
it was a hot day.......and everything was burning......i think ive got a scar on my leg from where i touched the handbrake lever a couple of times.....
yes...i know i shouldnt have wore shorts......i should know better......
i thought my shoes were gonna melt to the floorpan.......i mean it was REALLY hot......
is this normal for a fender running at speed on a freeway.....?
i dont remember ever feeling that much heat before......and when it was raining....it still didnt make any difference to the temp.......
can anyone else comment on this..........?
oh......by the way.....forgot to add the fuel economy figures for the bad fuel......
it dropped down to 17.41 l/100kms.......
anyone else have these sort of experiences before.....?
ps...the trip was sydney to albury and back again.......

130's rule
might be a viscosity index problem with the bad fuel....
if its dragging the pump back a bit you can get a similar problem to this but I wouldnt have thought that if the fuel was Australian standard that the variation could be enough to make That much difference...
If lurch has been remapped it makes it worse as the injectors stay open longer if the flame front doesnt establish correctly you just dump more fuel in in a less than idealy atomised form (yes even the new high pressure injectors pull this off) which means more goes out the exhaust valve still burning.
A give away is your boost gauge and EGT gauge. if your not making full boost for a given rev/load range and the EGT is climbing your over-injecting if you back off the noise pedal untill you get back to normal EGT/boost/power on the guages and by the seat of your pants you might be able to sneak back up on the noisey pedal and get away again, Just flooring it makes the problem worse.

the 90 when standard was returning thoes figures on bio, and had no power too!
wouldnt hold 100k's on the way to helensburg.
best thing i ever did was stop using that fuel!
cheers phil
Tony, those figures towing a car trailer with a car on it aren't that bad considering you filled with Bio, my experience with bio was at the same time as Phils, we both filled with bio for that trip.
I was towing our camper and Phil was solo, as Phil said we had bad economy and a lose of power, we eventually had enough and topped up with Dino Diesel and the improvement was almost instant.
Bio diesel is not good for TD5s because of the high injection pressures compared to the TDi or older style diesel engines, the viscosity of Bio is too much for common rail diesels and can do damage to the engine.

well...then thank the land rover gods thats all it is.......
i normally dodge bio diesel.....and that was probably one of the few times i didnt check before
i started to fill up.......and it was from a major brand servo.....ampol.....
my biggest worry was if i had an electrical fault or something.....i didnt have time to stop and camp the night.....
i had to rush back and unload the trailer and take it back as there was someone else waiting to use at 4:30am the next morning.....
what scared me was when i saw the temp guage flick up to the red and back.......
i had thought i lost my coolant........so i pull over and pop the bonnet...and all is fine......
lots of heat........but it was a stinking hot day......and i was pushing hard all day to get there and back in time......
sydney to albury and back again....and return the trailer.....
it took 57.41 litres of diesel to fill the tank back up......so that means that there was still 20 to 25 litres of bio still in there.......
this means that when thats all used up.....lurch should run better still.......
and blknight.aus...............yes.....lurch has been chipped.......otherwise i would have been dragging that trailer around in third gear there.....
and probably second gear on the way back......
he doest have all that much strength without the steroids........
