    1999 Land roverDefender

Can anyone tell me if there is another Thermostat on the TD5 engine, other that the large plastic one that is near the base of the Radiator? My temp guage is playing up, one minute is normal the next it is up near the red, then backdown again. I acidentally lost the overflow/expansion bottle cap the other`day and drove the car, causing it to over heat, i have tried to bleed the cooling system, but have only tried bleeding through the bleed screw in the top radiator hose. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I have taken out large plastic Thermostat and am waiting for new one to arrive. Cheers

    No there isnt.

If you lost all the coolant (or below the level of the bottom of the tank) and youve airlocked it its trying its damndest to purge and not doing so. park it with the thing so that all 4 sides take their turn at being highest (expansion tank side last) on as much angle as you can get and give it 1500rpm or so for about 10 seconds. Thats how I purge big red when I do the cooling system.

If its not that then youve got problems....

On a Disco TD5 you have to unclip the overflow bottle and lift as high as the hose allows to bleed.Make sure your heater is switched to hot whilst bleeding incase any air is caught in the heater matrix.
