I'd say go for a td5 too. Despite the scare stories, they are a fantastic engine, with very few issues, expecially now.
Later series 2 discos are great. If you can get one with ACE, get it. Handling is fantastic then. Nice to drive. lovely car.
Few niggles from the 2004 one I used for a while.
Space between seat cushion and steeing wheel isnt great.
Rear air bag suspension is a concern (slight) if fitted but does seem pretty good.
Headlights (fancy pocketed ones) are a bit rubbish.
Auto td5 sounds very dull. At least with a manual you can thrash it and it sounds good. The autos do sound dull!

It's worth waiting for a low km DII, 02 onwards. I have had two great D1's, however the DII is in its own class. Try to check for recall labels on the vehicle or evidence recalls have been corrected. If buying from a dealer, check if they have a good extended warranty - ts worth it.
The only DII down side - from mid 01 to end 03 there are no diff lock components.

What is the issue with the oil in the wiring loom. Is it that the oil is breaking down the wires themselves, or is the oil making it's way along the wires and into the ECU. If the oil is getting into the ECU there must be a way to seal the plug. Or maybe fit a different type of plug. I'm sure all this has probably already been looked into though.

Your comments are appreciated. Sorry for the delay in replying. I think I agree that the TD5 is by all accounts better.I am told it has a wider track so is more stable and the engine is 30% more powerful that the TDI.
Still having to locate a mechanic who knows these vehicles around Grafton seems difficult.
One local bloke,a mechanic says I would be beter off with a Prado but they seem inferior in the off road department.
I suppose I better drive a few and find out.

Nothing against the Prado, being a fine mid-size wagon with a generally good reputation.
But without meaning to sound glib, you either want a LandRover or you don't.
I bought a D1 in '99 because I liked the look of them and the live axles. Sadly had to part with it and had a series of other vehicles - all of which performed perfectly, but I always wanted my Discovery back.
I simply don't believe they are "interchangeable" with the other mid-size wagons (Prado, Pajero etc) and you will put up with their quirks as part of the deal.
