firstly i'd do a comprehensive search on here for TD5... theres plenty of threads...

main issues (to give you a hand with searches)

    Oil pump bolt
head failures (older heads i think)
    oil in loom
    some electrical gremlins

    plus look at

centre diff lock (was removed in some models or just selector was removed in others)
    EGR valve (mod to enhance)
chipping (mod to enhance and make it far more driveable)

im sure there is plenty more! people will add...

    Thanks

    Steve

I have an 02 TD5 Auto, and think it is great. 150K's without any dramas, gets serviced every 10K.
If It was me I would look at the latest model possible. I think it was 03' they upgraded the looks and put the central diff back in, this would be my pick.

I have the 03 TD5 with leather interior and couldn't be happier. My only issue is I can't get the oil filter to stop leaking. I am hoping that when it goes into be serviced next month I can get a good tip on how to tighten it to the correct level as I have tried from hand tight to very tight with no difference. Also I would love to know what tool they use as I can't get a traditional oil filter spanner in there.

    Hi Scott,

Following recent unfortunate events I too am in the market for a TD5 Disco, and as far as problems go the threads given by 5teve are essential reading!!!

IMHO the later model you can get with as many extras as possible then go for it...

As far as model range, I would go the base spec as there is less to go wrong, i.e no air suspension/ compressors. no active cornering enhancement pumps and electric seats can give trouble, and not many people really ever use the 7 seats.

Also consider colour, interior and exterior the dark ones always look filthy, and the light / metallic seem to be easier to keep clean!

As long as we dont get into a bidding war for the same car all will be sweet.... Oh and haggle heaps, Disco's depreciate pretty bad so NEVER pay the advertised price....6 months down the track you will feel a little better!

    Best of luck....

I know I said I was looking at the TD5 but what of the older 2.4 litre TDi engines and the Discos that they were in.

I am not too keen on the new fangled electronic do dads like the ACE etc etc. Any thoughts on which engine or Disco is preferable?

There are some Tdi 300 1999 which will be the best.
I have 1998 and the only problem that I have with Discos is the cargo capacity. I got it because I was unable to find a Defender back then.
If I have the chance to change it tomorrow for a Defy I will do it without a blink, but it is hard to get good money for a Disco so I just wait and see.
    Cheers

It all will come down to what you want any make or type of vehicle will give you troubles if they are not maintained properly. I have 95 300tdi has been quite reliable and only has a couple of things that annoy. Load space is a little on the small side for a family the d2 is little better. If i had my time again i would have bought a defender for the extra load space. The only downside is that they are less refined and not as comfortable as a disco. If you have the money and it is a Disco you want the d2 we be my choice particulary 02 models onwards as they appear to have better build quality than previous models. Td5 is lovely car to drive and even without a chip in the perfomance compared to 300 tdi is quite noticable. Electronic enhancements are probably of little concern unless you live out in the sticks as very little goes wrong with these. Oil in the loom which i've heard is fairly common on many a common rail engine and head movement on some engines was a problem. Td5 experts can tell you by looking at the engine numbers when this was a problem. Pick the right vehicle and get a mechanic experienced in that vehicle to check it out before you buy and you will be very happy.
