During the time we ran out of water the Mary river (Traveston Crossing) was barely flowing and Somerset and Wivenhoe were getting lots of rain. Just because it is raining on the coast at the moment doesn't mean it will be in a years time.

I grew up on tank water, so have always been careful with it wherever I am.
I have a poxy 3000l tank in Brisbane, for washing the car (never) or gardening (done even less) or whatever.

The thing that amazes me, is people concerns about water restrictions, are related to "unneccessary" use of water, or how much they can waste.
Before a few weeks rain, there was the real possibility of running out of enough water to live, or be comorftable.

If people were resonsible for the "sourcing" (ie tanks) and use of their own water everywhere, our water wasting ways would be a lot more responsible.

Well, you must know a HELL OF A LOT more than my Brother who lives in the dam area, along with every other resident.

So far there is very little water in the Mary River.

Beattie and Blighs idea is just like them full of air ans no substance. If you want a good dam, build it on the Gold Coast or Noosa! That is where all the water is..

However, if lack of water really bothers you, do what a lot of us have done, buy water tanks! I have 11,500 litres of it.. Have not used town water in 12 months.

More Rant:

It was reported back in December when an 800mm downpour hit the northern end of the Sunshine Coast that if the proposed Traverston Crossing Dam was built, it would have filled to 70% on that alone!

As far as tanks are concerned - my house was built when water tanks were BANNED. Consequently installing one is not an easy prospect (I won't go into details). It will be interesting to see in a few years time (assuming normal rainfall continues) what happens to all the tanks people in the city have installed. Without proper cleaning & maintenance we will soon remember why they were scrapped. Mosquito plagues, Dengue Fever, Ross River Fever etc etc... and how many pump systems are going to cark it and just sit dead whilst overflow goes straight down the drain. I reckon only 20% of people who have put in tanks during this water crisis will be motivated to maintain them when it's over and hoses are allowed again. Town water pressure will test peoples' loyalties to their tanks when some heavy duty cleaning is required.

I don't have anything against tanks personally - I design them into ALL my houses (just not the one I live in). What I do object to is poor planning on the part of councils & the state government given the exhorbitant rates we pay. If you live in a regional urban area in SEQ outside Brisbane then you can most likely afford the space and money (left over from your tiny, tiny rates bill) to put in a tank - so good luck to you.

...For the record, I am paying in the vicinity of $1000 per quarter for rates . This may help people understand my ire.

I am building in BCC this year (just by barely 100m as the crow flies).
I thought I'd skip on the water connection and just invest the money in installing nice big tanks.
Nope.
BCC requirement is that I must have town water connected to the food preparatrion area. And then there's flouridisation....

I've got no issues with the current water restrictions. The 'shower for 4 minutes' guideline I disregard, do my job for a day and you'll see why (plastering is a messy job, especially me doing it ).

We have water tank as well and it's nearly always full. After washing the mud caked Rangie and doing the usual cleaning the patio, etc... We don't have any issues with running out of water.
