I agree with you on the D3 but the Freelander TD4 is only $2000 more than the Petrol - why is it 10x more expensive for a D3?

Because the petrol V6 is remarkably cheap rather than the TDV6 being expensive . I've wondered for some time why they are off-loading them so relatively cheaply. They are advertised at a drive away price of $63,990 + metallic at $1500 if you want it, so all up $65.5K - Bargain!
Edit - to put this into perspective the cost of the Diesel TDV6 SE has gone up very slightly (a few hundred) since it was introduced here in 2005, but the cost of a Petrol V6 SE on the road has been slashed by nearly $9K compared to it's on the road price in 2005. That's where the price differential is coming from.
Possibly because the petrol V6 engine is made in vast quantities compared to the TDV6. Economies of scale kick in, making the engine relatively cheap.
Pity they didn't just bring the V6 out as an entry model V6 with coils and basic for $39990
Would have sold bucket loads
They did! But don't anymore, and never at that price... :)
The V6 4.0 Petrol was available as a 5 seater with coils in 'S' spec (lowest spec available, no terrain response, no air suspension, no zenons, no 3rd row seats, etc). It was about $63K on the road in 2005. Roughly the same price as the V6 Petrol SE is now.
I note that Land Rover don't list a V6 Petrol 'S' anymore.
I thought your on-the-road prices were low, and as I had a bit of time on my hands and went to the LR website to check out the prices:
Here are the prices as per LR's web site, but note all the stuff these prices EXCLUDE in the small print at the bottom, they add up to another $10K !!

So, taking a TDV6 SE with a rrp of $74,990
Let's have metallic at $1500 option (more desirable when selling, + better residuals + looks nicer IMHO, plus most people have it)
Stamp Duty on the above (calculated for WA - will differ state to state):
http://www.jonmurray.com/gallery/alb...y_%28WA%29.bmp
Stamp Duty as above: $4972
Rego (WA): $656
Dealer delivery (WA): $1995
Making a grand total of: $84,113 on the road for the TDV6 SE.
You'de probably get a couple of grand off maximum, that's if you've half a day to sit down and haggle! :D
The TDV6 HSE works out at $94,763 on the road (in WA) - pre-haggle price.
