As a general rule, no I wouldn't but when it comes to browns its a different story and they are aggressive. Many years ago my then 2 yr old son was saying "Daddy daddy, snake snake", I thought he was referring to a plastic toy one he had. He kept on and I went outside. He was standing at the fence and making a beeline to him was a huge brown...and it wasnt stopping, it wasnt fazed at all. Got the kids and dog in the house, went and got some tools of destruction, when I went around the side it buggered off. Next day the shepherd is going nuts, walk out and there he was nose to nose with the brown....the brown was almost a metre off the ground. If I had a gun it would have been night night nurse for the snake. Luckily I could call the dog off. Another time, my daughter walked 1 ft past another brown and with a 3 yr old playing in the front yard, that one did end up night night nurse. Finally I lost my 9mth old shepherd to a brown at Xmas, so if it is a case of the snake or a pet or child, snake will lose everytime, moreso browns and taipans,Quote:

If a red-bellied black snake bit a dog would it kill it? For that matter would it kill a human?
yes they can kill a dog if not treated, humans, I dont think there are any recorded cases, I could be wrong,Quote:

They seem to be on the move at the moment here with all the rain.
I managed to dodge a tree snake that was on the road this afternoon. I think the truck two ahead of me clipped him.
When I got home, my wife told me that the kids had seen a red-bellied black up in the wood pile.
On the weekend, our cat had a go at a tree snake. Unfortunately the snake didn't come off too well, but it did manage to slither off somewhere.
I agree to leave them when ever possible, but a dangerous snake in an area where kids play, has to go.

It sounds like you need some red bellied black snakes around your place, far too many nasties for my liking!
When it comes to people being killed from black snake bites, yes it is possible but from anaphylaxis (specific allergy to black snake venom) rather than the actual effects of the venom itself. While not reported this would most likely occur in people who have previously been bitten by a red bellied black.
A good resource for information on snake and other venominous bites in Australia is the Australian Venom Research Unit at Melbourne University.

For all you guys out there who kill snakes i would like to say that snakes only bight if desturbed or stepped on,most the time they will try get away from you.look at it this way what would you do if you were a brown snake and had a repretation like they do,what would your first reaction be if you sore a human or big angry jerman shepard?
If you have black snakes you want have browns, black snakes eat brown snakes.
Red bellies and pythons are ok and usualy will run away from most things bigger than them tho the brown and the tipan and the death adder are a different story and need to either be removed or killed im not a fan of any snake tho i would leave a red bellie or python alone tho a brown or adder anywere near the camp has 12 gauge written all over it tho in the bush there best left alone ....
Mate re read my post:mad:, if you are referring to my post re: big angry shepherds. The first time the brown entered our back yard, like anything, he ( the shepherd) will protect. Secondly, my shepherd that died at Xmas, we live on acreage but being a pup is inquisitive, again the snake would have had to come into the backyard. Thirdly, if you have young children playing in the back yard, your comments don't come into play. You can warn them about snakes, but my family and pets come first. And aside from all that, its not like I am the Pied Piper and can will the black snakes to come eat the browns in my area,Quote:
