Do you run over snakes?

A slight deviation but I knew a bloke who came home to his temporary accomodation on a sugar plantation after a night at the local. He saw a huntsman on the wall above the bed and despatched it with a 410!!!

As for snakes around the home, I've heard that if you spread lime around your perimeter it won't stop them coming in but it will get into them and dehidrate them killing them. Not sure how long it takes to kill.
Anyone have any knowlege of this one??

Have a friend that did similar, Ab diving of SA 20 odd years ago, was going about his business, not a sound, turned around and there was a great white shark just sitting there watching him about 1 1/2 metres away. Well, you wouldn't would you. I'd call that a clear message that goes something along the lines of "no diving for you".

I was camping up the Wickham River (Gregory ParK, NT) when a mate who is used to snakes and lives inland from Noosa. He has a python living in the roof keeping the rats and mice down.

Anyway the mate was on a river bank reading a book under a tree when under his chair was sliding a 2m King Brown. They saw each other the same time and it was moving very slow and mellow, but he was out of that chair calling for a shovel. Minutes later the snake was dead.

He apologised to the rest of us saying, I love snakes and i love wildlife but sorry, I'm 4 hours drive from the nearest airfield and that king brown had to die.

We accepted his apology and that night having a wee I think ventured about three steps from my swag and had the torch on.

Ive heard tell they are nasty nasty critters when they are awake.

Lokka, there aren't any Taipans in NSW, there are 2 types Inland Taipan and the coastal Taipan and only found in QLD.

Most of coastal NSW has Browns, Red-Belly Blacks, Tiger Snakes and Adders.

Another black snake is this one

The Blue-Belly Black snake, native to Northern NSW and southern QLD coast.


brown coloured specimens can be confused with Eastern Brown Snakes (Pseudonaja textilis), which are slimmer and have orange blotches on belly and different scalation. Collett's Snake (Peeudechis colletti) which has more ventral scales.

The king brown is also a part of the black snake family,also known as the mulga snake.

Have to say your mate was a bit of a clown. It was obviously not threatening him. Most often they will just slither away. If they are not creating any immediate danger, let them keep going.

Of course i wasn't there.
Didn't see the snake's movements.
Don't know your mate's experience.
Never been in that part of the country/don't have a doctorate on browns
Don't know the snake's intentions.
BUT, with the unbidden arrogance of one possessing the skill of divine divination I will call your friend a bit of a clown.
I will hide behind the claim that it is an individual expressing an opinion.

What a turkey - most people who get bitten do so because they're trying to kill the snake. Boof head. What was the snake living near the house or somewhere nearby where humans might be playing? If not why on earth would you risk being bitten - 4hrs from nearest airfield..... ???
