    Winch goes mad

My non-LR-owning friend (if there's such a thing ) has just installed a cheapish winch (Ironman i think) on his LandC*****r. The type with the wireless remote.

It somehow had a control box that wasn't sealing (it's only a few weeks old). Isolator wasn't installed. It turned itself on (going inwards ). Bent the bullbar in, broke the rollers, took some strands off the cable, killed the battery and it won't winch in anymore. Problem was corrosion on the remote receiver terminals (no, he didn't sit on the remote). Sounds a bit unlikely to me, but...

As the place of purchase is giving a full replacement, this is not a technical question. But very interesting all the same.

Is this possible, or did he sit on the remote?

Or did you press the remote... just for giggles at the expense of a Cruisers front end?

the truly funny thing to do would be to sneak out to it sometime, unspool the cable, drag it under the car and back over the roof back onto the bullbar.....

My brother has one of those winches, I'll bet they all operate on the sam frequency, also his is a one push of the in button and it keeps going until you press stop. could someone else have been driving past with a remote?

I think the idea of wireless winch controllers is a rather dangerous idea. i doubt any of them have any kind of signal filtering. i don't think it would be much fun having a limb wound up in a drum if one started up due to a false signal

I'm with you paul, I can just see it now, a bunch of people go 4wd ing and one pulls his cable out, hooks around a tree, next thing 4 winches within 200m all start winching in their bullbars!!!!
would sound quite funny, all that metal crunching!!

    who's fault would it be?

Personally i think the idea of having a winch that does not have a cut of swtich is terribly dangerous. We all have cut of switches as standard in the Uk but when arb in brisbane fitted my winch on the 90 they looked at me as if i was mad when i demanded a cut of switch on the winch
