The difference is that the Indians know how to provide good service. I have to say that the Ford service has been, well, awful.

I have an open mind about what Tata will do with Land Rover but really it can only get better and strategically, for Tata, it makes good business sense. India has a huge and growing middle class who is looking for quality vehicles and weekend toys, and the Land Rover mystique exists in the minds of the up and coming, more so than that of Toyota, etc.

In the US/Europe the economic strata have existed for a lot longer and the competition is harder to shift, so despite their efforts at changing the product line customers tended to stay with their preferred brands, and that was not helped with new 4x4 entrants from Porsche, VW, etc. Regardless of whether those marques were better or worse as off-roaders, that is generally not the reason that people buy this brand or that.

So, in India Tata have the chance to create a new market where there was none before. It'll be interesting to see of they are successful, because if they are Land Rover will be huge.
