Bad news for your Australians!

Blimey folks, I did not expect this thread to start WW3 :p

Yep Britain did manage to colonise a large part of the world (quite surprising considering the size/population of the UK), but that is now history.

Anyway I am looking forward to my visit to Australia, yes I know a tour of just over 7 months will only scratch the surface in trying to explore your country. Hopefully I will manage to meet a few AULRO forumeers.

Diana, please feel free to pop the tab on a few tinnies for me. Even cold ones, but please pour the contents into a glass for me. I ave even been know to have ice in my beer as well!

Be warned that I am likely to be asking a lot more questions in the next few weeks in the run up to me departing the UK

Incidentally, when I was at school WA was Western Australia, not West Australia. I am pretty sure the name hasn't changed anytime recently...

You could, but you would be wrong.

South Australia was never a penal colony, it was peopled by free settlers. No convict heritage there.

It is one of those little things that annoys me out of all proportion. I often hear it on the news, in weather forecasts, see it in the paper, etc,etc. As far as I am concerned, west Australia is all of the landmass west of a line drawn up the middle of the continent (which would pass through the NT and South Australia).

_You could argue that all convicts, settlers and soldiers, gentry and governors were, after all they were all of British descent :D

You would certainly be wrong. As BJ said, South Australia was settled by free settlers, not convicts.

Some of those early Convicts that landed in NSW, were the product of an unfair legal system which transported people for simply stealing a loaf of bread to feed their starving families, for example.

To have had a convict in the family tree, is seen by many to be a badge of honour today.

Very few of the people collectively termed "Kanaks" would have laughed as they were effectively slave labourers kidnapped from South Pacific islands.

Similarly for the Afghan camel drivers.

The Chinese and Japanese arrived as free settlers (gold rush and pearl industry) would have rarely laughed given the discrimination and abuse they suffered at the hands of the British colonialists.
