UK living

i've been here (in oz) for just over a year now so i dare say prices have risen slightly but you'd need to go far to find a better place than cardiff (wales) and it's surrounds.
the only thing more expensive there is the fuel ( or house prices if your bang in the middle of the city).
it has everything you could want with it being a city and in the last 10-15 years has been one of the fastest developing city's in europe - in terms of money and investment pumped in to modernise the city. it has the greatest rugby stadium in the world :cool:- right slap bang in the middle surrounded by so many diffent types of pub's/club's/cafe's that you'd never get to try them all and two huge nhs hospitals in the heath and llandock




















and best of all a very similar climate to perth :o :D

considering Australia is poaching every healthcare worker we can get our hands on, especially from the UK, i'd question the move to the UK

from my experince having lived in the UK for 3.5 years, i'm questioning your sanity

Yeah Perth...shire , ....Scotland !

I thought everyone was moving out of the UK... appart from the Eastern Europeans who seem to be flocking here!!

Seriously though, there are some nice places and some very nice places, then theres some real crap bits!

As has been said before, house prices are very high, depending on where you need to be. If you need to be near London then £400,000 wont get you much at all. If you get outside the cities, then £400,000 will get you something nice and very nice if you get into the country outisde of any commuter belt and second home areas.

Diesel is currently about £1.23 per litre and is on the up. Likewise with road tax for 4x4's (between £175 and £400 at the moment) - This government seems hell bent on taxing us on anything and everything... Soon there will be a breathable air tax!! But I digress!!!

I guess the first question is WHERE do you need to be - Can you manage out in the sticks? Do you need to be in the south or could you go north? I realise this is a relative term - Out in the sticks here is a few hours drive, not a few days!

My personal opinion is that Yorkshire, Lake District and Scotland are the nicest areas, although not necessarily in that order! As for the worst areas... Dont want to offend anyone, so lets just say I hate cities and prefer to be in the country! As part of my job I end up driving around the whole country now and again which reminds me, our road network must be far more congested than yours! Time was Monday morning and Friday afternoons where busy, now it seems as though its 24hr chaos... or maybe Im getting older!!

Ok. Distance wise I travel 160km round trip for work now. My research so far hints that I could work all over the country so it doesn't have to be London. I would prefer country living. UK is just one idea. It's a case of If I go looking then why not look into overseas and the UK seams serious about building their health IT network.

Ali... The only reason most Brits do a high mileage by car is coz they're lazy fcukers and they're too stuck up their own @rses to use public transport!!!

Approx £280k - £300k will get you an OK 3bed terraced/semi house in the suburbs around London. It'll then be a commute by train into the city which will take approx 1hr.

By comparison, that money will get you a very nice 4bed house, with garage, out in the countryside. Thing is, you will then rely on your car for commuting unless you get to work from home.

I sold my place in London and moved out but fortunately I work from home a lot and when I have to commute, I use a motorbike.

A lot of your choices will be driven by your specific needs... Kids? Work? Commute? If you don't have kids, I'd suggest getting a job in one of the cities and just rent an apartment close to work. It'll give you a chance to work out where to go while enjoying the social & cultural aspects of the country. ;)

Thanks to the hickups in the economy, it's a buyers market at the moment so if you do come over I think things will be working in your favour. The exchange rate is also quite good for you...

As you know when we met up on sunday down at Cooma that i'm moving back to UK soon and it is going to be an expensive move back !

The main reason we are going back is too look after my wife's parents and will be living with them for a while then hopefully get something near to them..the bad thing is..they live in one of the most expensive spots of the UK..the south east and for us to get anything remotely spacious will be in the 350,000 and above range..:o

When I moved here 4 years ago , we sold our 4 bedroom house in the north west for 250,000 ..it has been sold again just recently for 325,000 !

That's the sort of rise for the north west..but the south is even higher..

As mentioned before by jon , it all depends on where you want to live and can get work..their are lots of nice areas and countryside still around..

My parents live in the highlands of Scotland and it's dirt cheap up that way !!

Petrol will always be a rough point of discussion for anyone in the UK..!...it's something they have gotten used to every year with the incumbent chancellor adding more revenue to his pocket by taxing it to the hilt..

Good luck with your research Edd..hope you manage to find something suitable in the UK...as Dobbo mentioned earlier as well..the UAE is pretty nice...I worked in Abu Dhabi during the early 90's..nice tax free salary and lovely weather..
