Its obviously up to you but, there is a reason that all us poms come here! the UK just isnt how it used to be... not even 8 years ago... in the cities around where im from, derby nottingham and leicester, its becoming harder and harder to hear someone speak english.. and amazingly there is so many people haning around the city during the day when surely they should be at work... oh hang on thats right.... they dont need to!

anyway i'll get off my soapbox

We left 18 months ago the Aus$ was at 2.52 to the pound which was great for us... its gone the other way now which is good for you...

petrol was just hanging under the pound a litre mark

    i was earning 31k gbp

i sold a 2up 2 down end terrace for 110,000gbp in a place called heanor (derbyshire) which is a very cheap place to buy (honest) and me and rach sold her ex council house, 3 bed 1 bath, which we had recently renovated for 119,000.

we earned enough money to do what we wanted but couldnt get much in the way of savings and anything extravagent.

every weekend was a struggle as the weather would be crap, we'd be shopping, or doing something we didnt want to do.. all we seemed to do was work and eat and sleep... and we got more and more wound up by the stupid paper laws and nannying that the country was creating. scum got rewarded, hard workers got nailed.

coming here we found petrol was much cheaper, still is..

houses are i think more expensive but then again you get far more for your money here... no way i could of got what we have here for the money... but then again i wouldnt of been able to buy one of these in the UK.

food we find is much cheaper, as we rarely shop at supermarkets, we use the markets etc.. i'd say half the price of the UK supermarkets (as there are few local markets / butchers / grocers left in the UK.

traffic is as bad and i travel slightly further than the UK but only for about the same amount of time as the UK (if that makes sense?) but i also have the option of using my bike along the cycle path (non - existent in the UK) and the train (non existent for me in the UK) we find public transport a load cheaper here too...

general bills are cheaper i think too as you have less gas as you dont have to heat the house, rates are about 3/4 what i paid on a 2 bed house so cheap and car rego and insurance is lots cheaper too...

i'd personally say you need to see the Doc to get this silly notion out of your head but like i say its your choice.. i'd be great for a long term tour if you know what you were getting into!

have you thought about looking at Perth? they are always looking for healthcare people and there are that many of us Poms here its practically the UK now!

Just for info.. we went back after 9 months and things had got worse, and we couldnt wait to get back here.... we could never go back and live there permanently... alot would have to change to drag us back, and i still dont think it would manage... we love this place.

    Thanks

    Steve

I am sorry to say it, but if this is the case, just remember the grass is not always greener, you can spend a life time searching for the elusive job and never find it, most jobs anywhere in the world are crap(trust me I know), you just have to face the fact you are going to get sh@t on where ever you are and get on with it.

Been doing that for 2 years now. These days I have to stop myself from driving down the freeway and not even getting there. If work actually wanted us to succeed I could cope. but why care and put your heart into a project that they are deliberatly trying to sabotage? At work these days we succeed despite what they do to us.
Upper management is realy trying to make us walk so they don't have to make a descision. 2 years of the same question phrased differently. I have jobs that are 4 years old still waiting for a response that they won't give me so I have to tell those in the coal face I can't do anything to help.

An uncle of mine is in a similar line of work in Brissy. Talking to him about this just last weekend he noted that when he visited the US for information he found they are actually a long way behind the times. Maybe you could go there and poke them in the ribs, start a revolution.

I know where your coming from but Im at the other end (management)

I have 2-3 really good workers that will put there heart and sole into doing there job and then I have 6 or so others that don't give a rats about anything, worst of all they know that I can't sack them because I have no one to replace them with.

Over here in WA you can't find anyone to work for you unless they are brain dead drug heads and then people tell you its too far away when there only 20mins drive.

I have made the choice that I will leave my job once I get back from holidays as like you I have had a guts.

George130 - despite what Adam said, have you looked at moving to WA? My wife works with a few health informatics people who all love their job (don't know how pay compares, but wages are generally higher over here), and the lifestyle over this side of the country is pretty good.

Looking into the cost of living in the UK.
I'm trying to way up packing up and heading over to the UK to work in the NHS.
Any advise in cost and what parts of the Country to look at. I'm a jack of all trades in Health Informatics so work should be almost anywhere.
    Edd,
If you want to discuss moving to Uk, happy to chew the fat over a coldie, we lived there for a couple of years. I live in Yass as well.

I hadn't thought of WA. We were supposed to roll our system out over there 2 years ago. Still waiting. Slow Disco it might be worthwhile.
Only chose the UK as I ask SWMBO monday night to pick UK, US, AU. After her choice I told her why.
I love the field but so am interested in jobs doing similar things. I can see the potential once they get over the fear of big brother and the belief that a computer will tell them how to treat a patient. It's not about that but giving clinitians the power to see the history and trends that matter and also removing the mundane management reporting that takes them away from primary care.
