    Help, Stuck at Charleville!!!!

Was driving down thru augathella on my way to toowoomba from longreach when the centre diff in the D2 decided to lock, causing wind up in the transmission.

The D2 still drives, but there was a burnt oil smell from around the gearbox t/case area. It's an auto so it still has oil in it.

My question is what shuld I do? Should I

    1) Pull the front tailshaft out and drive it home and hope there is no damage to the gear box

    2) Pull the lever off the tcase bolt and see if it will unlock like that, but I don't think this will work as it has the genuine lever in it and it will go into all positions but the centre diff stays locked

    3) Let RACQ tow it the 900km home

Any ideas on what may have caused this would be much appreaciated.

    Cheers,
    Ash

If you have the highest level of RACQ coverage which includes free towing, get it flatbedded home. The RACQ will give you accommodation and a hire car.

Yeah, already in the hotel provided by RACQ, it's just a pain in the **** getting home, will probably have to fly as there are no hire cares out here for 1 way hire.

I'd leave the CDL in the locked position and pull the front shaft before continuing on.

That would be what I would do!

But first, I'd "disengage" the CDL inside the cab and reverse backwards for 100-200 meters and see if it unlocks

If that fails, pull the shaft, move the lever to locked and drive home.

You'll know if it disengages by the sudden loss of speed during forward motion

Most D2's I've seen run Lt 230 SE. They should not fail with out warning. What colour is the transfer oil? Seems something has been hot and done a weild job on CDL. The damage is already done!. If your stuck. Pull the sharft, Change the Transfer oil and monitor the heat. You will smell it. Tilt top is best option as more damage is likely if driven. I am suprised this has hapened in a D2.

Unfortunatley I think your right. I think it has got hot in the 6000km I have driven in the last week and there was a gear oil smell when it stopped.

So when I pull the shaft I won't do any more damage if gthe CDL has already stuffed its self?

Don't drive it Ash, just in case you do anymore damage, could be only minor damage at the moment.

Flatbed it, it's a pain i know but better safe then sorry.

I think you are likely to do more damage as the CDL shares the same oil as the rest of the transfer case - the rest of the bearings and possibly the gears will be already damaged, so that continued operation is likely to damage gears, possibly shafts and casing, and may also risk sudden complete drive failure. None of this will be because of operating as two wheel drive, but due to operating with the transfer case known to have overheated and with unknown damage, except that the CDL has seized.
