I just sat through this, and i know its probably a paid advertisement from Toyota so they arent going to say anything to bad about it, and nor should they its a relatively good vehicle, all be it over priced. But there are a few things that got up my nose a bit. Glen was testing the DAC (Downhill control) and it is so bloody noisy its not funny, it sounds like someone is stroking a purring cat on steroids through a load speaker, fair dinkum its really loud. Glen made sure he was posititive about it saying its reasuring hearing the sound because you know its working, but in the Best 4wd of 2008 test on the other DVD with this months mag Roothy was honest, he reckoned it was just plain annoying, and that with some skill you were better off going down the hills without it. The D3 seems to manage to do things fairly quietly i have no idea why the 200 series' gadgets need to be so loud.
They did have a whole heap of people crapping on about how toyotas were the only vehicles that could cope with the conditions of the cape and so on. But they interviewed a mechanic up that way who said that a whole heap of "imported" 4wds come and do the cape and they arent up to the task, so they come to him and say can you fix this and he has to tell them he cant do anything, but if they had a toyota he could help them. What a load of f-ing tripe. 1stly when did toyota start making the Land Cruiser in Australia? Last time i checked they were imported aswell. Secondly i doubt he would have every spare toyota part available in his workshop so would more than likely need to order parts in, could this not be done for any other vehicle?
At the begining they gave a brief history about Land Cruiser in Australia and how they discovered Australia, what a load of crap. Sure i am a land rover fan, and i wouldnt care if the facts were truthful, but they arent. The claim the Land Cruiser was responsible for building the Snowy mountains scheme, it might have when they finally arrived in Australia, but for the several years before Land Cruiser was even available here the Snowy Mountains Scheme employed some 800 Series 1 Land Rovers. Secondly how they hell could toyota have discovered Australia, early Explorers like Len Beadel used Land Rovers. Now this isnt a rant because i like land rovers and hate toyotas cause i dont hate toyotas, this is a rant because Toyota claim all this crap and it simply isnt true. Land Rover was in Australia for some 8 odd years before land cruiser even arrived here.
I am sure Toyota has played a large part in what they claim but they have stretched the truth somewhat in this DVD, sure its an advertisement and they arent exactly known for their truth, but some of what is in this is to far off just to be advertising spin.
I feel better now.![]()

I thought it was amusing that they banged on about how the 200 Series was "the most anticipated 4wd of the last decade"!! Gees, give me a break!
I think the D3 was more anticipated and definitely more innovative than the 200 series! All Toyota have ever done s steal other peoples ideas. Sure they implement them quite well, but they are not ground breakers and they certainly dont offer value for money 4wd's!
Angus
for $80000 dollars plus on roads it had better be.
I have driven a V8 Cruiser, it was a 70 series but same engine minus one turbo and the engine really is impressive, it does everything with such ease, but after watching the best 4x4 of 2008 segment on the other DVD the 200 series is far from being the perfect 4wd, the 3.0L patrol beat it in alot of the tests they did. If i wasnt a land rover fan and had to choose between the 2 the patrol would get my pic, the base model patrol is 30k cheaper (plus on roads) or i could have the top spec patrol with all the bells and whistles for a little under 20k cheaper and get a camper trailer with the change. The engine simply doesnt make it worth the money.

With marketing perception is reality. Toyota know this and this is why they are using media available to them to get their message across. People who have 80K to spend could spend it on a D3 as well. Toyota would obviously prefer if it was spent on a Landcruiser.
I think that the landcruiser would make novice 4wders a bit edgy when they activate hill decent control
And i'm over 4wd action goin on about toyotas and not including land rover in any of thier tests.
I relented and bought this issue. (I had to kill time on a flight the other day, and there was a kitted 130 in it anyway).
Notice the fuel consumption?!! Something like 5.5K/L and about 4.7K/L for the little 3L in the patrol.
And I thought my 40 year old engine'd V8 D1 was outrageous.
Even if I had $80k to blow on a car I couldn't afford to trek in it at upwards of $1.50/L for diesel!
