Agreed - do all the things you've been putting off.

What mileage is it? Change anything that is suspect or unknown or coming to the end of its service life - don't try & squeeze the last few kms out of these items.

E.g. on my big trips all the belts & hoses usually get renewed, often new batteries as well. Prior to my next trip the fuel pump is geeting changed, & the plastic oil/water exchanger is being looked at.

200tdis from memory have an awkward heater hose at the back of the head. And those plastic radiator plugs are asking for trouble. You'll inspect the timing belt beforehand of course.

And take some old, worn brake pads. Sand can chew out pads, & you don't want metal to metal.

Thanks for the info guys. The Red Terror has 230,000 klms and did the Hay River track last year with the same group.

The timing belt was done just before the last trip so should be OK. I am going to get the clutch checked. It is fine at present but just want to make sure. I will do a full run down on all the bits that need servicing and am trying to keep the weight down - no darling we don't need the kitchen sink.

I have to agree with the campfire comment. There was nothing better on the last Simpson trip than sitting between the dunes in a gidgee patch with a big fire and a series of Defenders camped down for the night. Can't wait for this trip to begin.

That's just Chenz Kelvin..........he never was much good at maths.:p Tis earlier than '96, more like '92 or '93.

Id agree with all thats been said. However, you say that you are getting the clutch checked...If you mean you will actually get to see the clutch plate then its only another hours work to replace the clutch plate. Whilst your in there also replace the thrust bearing arrangement and clutch release fork - all known to cause problems over time.

Of course if checking means seeing if it works, then the above will be expensive!

Id carry a clutch and brake cylinders (unfortunately the TD5s have different part numbers for the brake cylinder - cant remember for the clutch - think they are the same)

Good advice about brake pads.

I agree NM I am no good at Maths. The Red Terror does however like to lie about her age, it is a 92 but very young for its age.

I agree with those that do a thorough pre-trip and then go for lightness. As someone said it's not that far across the desert, and if you go 15psi you'll barely trouble a Defender so it's not hard on the vehicle. Prepare for a breakdown, plenty of supplies etc.

I would however take a sixth tyre and repair kit.
