Aus - India Free Trade Agreement

If Australia signs off on a Free Trade Agreement, Aust, India advance free trade talks - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) will that mean that we can buy new Land Rovers tax free?

    Hi there

There is a lot of discussions regarding to the potential of TATA taking over Land Rover - my opinion they have the dollars behind them it could actually help there sales & quality ......

Will it make much difference to the actual sales prices if its tax free?

Just curious, what approx percentage of new car prices are tax.....

I know that there was an import tax equivalent of the GST and then there is the inescapable GST on the sale to you, however there also a Luxury Car Tax of 25% (on top of GST) for vehicles priced above $53,123.00 (It is probably why vehicles are either under $50,000.00 or above $65,000.00 the jump is the result of the $25% tax.)

My understanding is that under a free trade agreement these additional taxes can only equate to the taxes charged by the other party to the FTA.

For example 10% GST is payable for goods imported from anywhere in the world except the USA because the equivalent tax in the US is only about 1%, so all we pay is the 1% equivalent.

Was watching BBC World the other night and there was footage covering the elections in Nepal, all over the place there were Nepali Army and Police trucks all with "TATA" on the rear tailgate.

They must be doing something right.

After the UN donated dozens of landcruizers and nissan patrols to pro -indonesian militia after EastTimor voted for independence in 1999, the UN started to tire of the heavy, expensive to buy and maintain, thirsty jap mobiles and started buying TATA.
An india-Aust FTA would have little effect on australian imports ofany possible Indian produced 110 as there are no longer much in the way of taxes on such products anyway. however hopefully tata sacks the imcompetent ******* at LRA.
I too look forward to TATA rebadging the Nano as the Jaguar SX-type.

    Hi there

Dont right of the TATA products just yet - we have been using the TATA heavy duty 8WD trucks within the Mining Industry as platforms for our drills for the past few years.

They are quite good off road, very capable indeed with the weight they carry but the only down side we have found is they are not fast.

And before we start righting TATA of - the current build quality of the new Land Rovers is also nothing to rave about...........

LCT kicks in after $57,123, i did a quote on customs entry for a $178k USD heavily modified Mustang from the US and after all the taxes and GST it worked out at a little under $250k AUD landed.
