    Question Trip tool kit

    Hey All,

I'm heading off on an approximately 5000km journey around NSW, SW QLD and SA. I'm wanting to put together a tool kit for any possible repairs during the trip. What would anyone recommend as an addition to my tool kit for a D2 TD5??

    Many thanks

Geez Angus he's gunna need a semi to tow all that, just get a car trailer and put another td5 on it then you can use it to tow the other one when it dies.

what you carry depends on how far from civiliation your going to go.

that list would be a good starting point for say doing the canning stock route and thats what youd expect to have between say 3 vehicles unless you were travelling solo in which case you need your head examined.

if your staying to major roads you dont need a lot other than the get you out of trouble right now stuff.

If you checked your brake pads before you went you would not bother with them.

    cheers

He said tool kit not spares kit.

I'm no mechanic but I carry a small tool kit with few things thrown in it for High Country Trips, you might beef it up a little if going really remote.

    ummmm let me see .....

    3/8 socket set
set of open ended/ring spanners common sizes to fit vehicle
small and large vice grips ( the handiest things in the kit ! )
flat/philips screwdrivers - long and stubby
allen key and torx key set
electricians shears - good for cutting most things, plastic, thin wire, tape etc.
    large and needle nose pliers
    tin snips
    hacksaw and spare blades
"Leatherman" tool or a copy of.
    Hammer
Multimeter ( cheap one from Bunnings will do ) - if you don't know how to use one, learn.
A "Safety Seal" Puncture repair kit and plenty of "plugs" ( this is the best quality one I've seen and used it many times with great success). If you have tubed tyres these are no good however.

As for spares, I only carry a set of hoses and belts and a spare rubber "donut" for driveshaft, and brake and ATF fluids.
Roll of gal tie wire, plenty of good quality gaffer tape ( gets used for something on most trips ), WD40, some hose clamps, araldite, small selection of bolts, nuts, screws, electrical connectors, fuses, electrical wire.
Old battery drill converted to run off car battery, and some drill bits.

This has got me out of most situations I've found myself in, but I'd be interested to know what else would be worthwhile without going overboard.

    this is what i do/carry

spanners, hop under your rig and pop the bonnet and make sure you have the required spanner for the nuts and bolts you can see

throw in a selection of pliers

    multi meter

    screwdrivers

D2 hub nut......is it the same as a D1/defender, i have always carried onr but have never needed it

i have a plastic container with a heap of of bolts/nuts/screws/washers, spilt pins, basiclly things i find on the ground or left over from fitting things to the rig

and as guys have mentioned, do complete service, replace all things that will need replacing over the next say 10000km, this will mean you won't need to carry things like brake pads, tie rod ends etc do all this and you probably won't need to break out the toolkits

    Tools, not spares:-

    Jack, jack plate, wheel chocks
    Wheel nut spanner
    Set of socket spanners.
    Set ring/open end spanners
    Long nose pliers
    Fencing pliers
    Vice grips
Crimp tool, wire fittings and wire.
    Set flat and Phillips screwdrivers
    Tinsnips
8" and 12" flat second cut files
    6" second cut triangular file
8" second cut round file, all with handles

Spanners to fit the following if not already in sets -
    radius arm to axles and chassis; sump, gearbox, transfer, diff, drain and level plugs; tie rod end nuts; hub nuts;

    Set allen keys

    Multimeter
    Inspection light
Insulation tape, duct tape, tie wire, fencing wire
    Assortment split pins
Assortment bolts, nuts, tek screws, self tappers
    Thread locker
    Silicone gasket replacement

Cordless or 12v drill with drill bits

    Workshop manual

I've probably missed something obvious, but this is roughly what I took on a 10,000km trip across Australia last year. And used none of them, except to change two wheels, and help other motorists.

I did a 7000km trip to Tassie and back in my Holden Rodeo and carried two shifters, multimeter and no spares. Always used to carry stuff and never needed it so left it all at home.
On that trip I used one shifter to remove the aircon belt and idler puller. Then again to replace the idler pulley on the way home in Moree when I felt we needed aircon again.

On a 4wd trip in the Disco and camper I take a set of open end spanners and ring spanners in metric and imperial and a 1/2in and 1/4in socket set the same and a hub socket. Plus electrical tools and a few spares.

Don't think I'd take all that if it was just a camping trip or road trip though.

I've also printed out the RAVE CD in two sections. One is the breakdown book which has things like engine, cooling system, electrical system. Things that might breakdown on their own. The other is things that I could break on a 4wd trip. Such as front and rear axle assemblies, steering, driveline stuff essentially. Not a complete print of the RAVE CD but will get me out of trouble. Only about 1cm thick each.

Also get top level cover for your states automobile club.
