    for another day. But.... maybe?

I have started to become worried about the cost of diesel and petrol and even LPG in recent times. I guess my concern is about how much longer I can afford to drive anywhere. It is fair to say that lots of us will always need our vehicles and I suppose I'm not one of them but I still want one!

    SO!!!

This evening I was outside trying to get the 2a workshop going and thinking the 2.25 petrol may be seeing its last days but then I thought........

What about converting it into an electric vehicle? Okay, stop laughing I'm serious!!!!

I have not weighed mine and in coming days I will be. I believe they are around 1.3 tons but someone will be able to answer that quickly. That however is with the engine and lots of other bits which can be taken off.

So what do you all think? I have been looking at and researching electric vehicles for around 9 months and won't pretend to of considered this seriously until tonight but hey it seemed viable to me. Imagine how much quieter it would be haha.

ohh.... lol, never seen it but...there you go! I have only looked up Australian sites to be honest.

But, this seems positive. I'll have a look around this site.

There's a bloke drives around Perth in a white mustang that's electric.
Just by watching it you would never know.

So move the pollution and expense to your power bill/supplier

Just running our house costs a HUGE amount per quarter and we have energy saver everything!!!

I'd hate to imagine how much my power bill would be, or the ongoing cost of battery cells after the first few years.

The outlay exceeds the return, by a substantial amount!

Xav,I have thought the same thing. Somewhere on here i started a thread on the weight of different landies. From that it seems S1 are the lightest with a SWB S11 a close second. Their construction is ideal for making places to store batteries. I would like to go lighter but it certainly would be good off the road.
From some rough calculations, on the conservative side, if you ignore the intial set up cost, the actual cost of electricity to run it would be at least 1/3 of that petrol at the current prices. It is the intitial set up price that is the catch. The bits aren't cheap.

It has been done before, I read an article ages ago of a RRC built as an electric vehicle in the 70's, you need to consider the wieght of the initial vehicle, the weight of the motor or motors (if you want some kind of speed) the weight of the enormous battery bank, cost of batteries to build the enormous battery bank. Would you be using just one big motor and retaining the gearbox or using multiple motors, one for each axle. What do you intend doing about the braking system? You could use the existing one or use the torque of the motors to brake?

Another idea is you could try and build a Sterling engine.
