LR Defender nut/bolt sizes; socket set

For LR Defender Td5 110 CSW (2005), is it metric bolt/nut sizes or inches?

Should I buy a 1/4 inch drive socket set, or 3/8 inch (or other)?

Which socket sizes are “must have” and what are the sizes which it’s a good idea to have?

    Should be (mainly) metric

1/4" and 3/8" would be useful as would 1/2" drive

Would say 3/8" drive would be more useful than the other 2 for the majority of stuff but they all have their uses.

10mm,11mm,12mm,13mm,14mm,15mm,16mm,17mm,19mm with a 3/8 drive would do most stuff. Some smaller stuff could be useful, say 8mm,9mm etc but they could be 1/4" drive. some of the larger ones 17mm adn 19mm upwards could be 1/2" drive.

Cant remember what the large nuts holding the radius arms on are but they are bigger that 19mm.

Also bigger stuff needed for things like hub nuts and so on.

Also need to think about deep sockets aswell, as for some things they are useful.

    Cheers
    Pete.

if your only doing light maintenance type work and minor services you want a 1/4 3/8th drive combo socket set that will cover from about 6mm through to 19mm (and often comes with imperial) and includes a ratchet, drive adaptor and a screwdriver handle

you will also need to purchase an alen key set and a torqz drive set (both of which can be had in 3/8th or 1/3 inch drive) for some of the fittings and the gearbox filler.

you will need the larger set of 1/2 inch drive which should cover from 13mm through to 24mm and include a 6 inch extention bar (for the tcase fill) s ratcet handle and either a strong arm or a Tbar.

that covers all of your normal maintenance requirements and you should be able to get all 3 lots in reasonable quality tools for less than $250

The other tool I recomend is the 52mm hubnut spanner for doing the wheel bearings BUT if you're looking at going to that depth of maintenance you should STRONGLY consider a decent torque wrench.

on the subject Dave, do you reckon a 52mm impact socket would fit the hubnuts? I can get the impact socket for less than a tube spanner here but no landy to measure off.... (about A$12)
