    Pootroll ..ouchy

Mate of mine has done 80000kms in his 4.2lt turbo pootroll diesel, oil changed every 5000k..warranty expired in Jan 08 number 3 bearing grabbed last week stopping the car intantly.....thinking he dropped a valve o something..on inspection the crank is so far outta wack it can't be machined..
$12000 later he is back on the road.....80ks a diesel shouldn't even be worn in let alone a catastrophic failure....
Poor guy..but I did warn him not to buy one...

Nah he should have bought a Landy instead and ...........$$$$$$$$$$$!

Sorry but I have just got mine back and haven't forgiven it yet.

Interesting though, I thought those motors were bulletproof.

At least the 4.2 isn't anywhere near as bad as the 3.0l hand grenade that Nissan make.

I wonder what brand and type of engine oil he used for his 5000 km oil changes. The Nissan 4.2 TD motor has very specific requirements for oil, and it's harder to get than oil for more modern diesels. Specifically it requires oil to have a much much higher concentration of calcium additives, from what I understand, and there's only like 2 or 3 oils in Australia that meet this requirement.

Oils definitely ain't oils, as Castrol correctly put it.

    That is very unusual!
The 4.2 is usually a good motor, the 3.0l I would not put in a lawnmower
I loved this story from carsurvey.org
"2001 Nissan Patrol 3.0 TD, We have now had 3 engines fitted in 3 years, and now this 3rd engine is overheating badly.
We have had 2 gearboxes fitted, and now this 2nd gearbox is beginning to clunk into reverse gear, the same as the other 2 gearboxes.
This vehicle should be a total embarressment to Nissan, but the service and back up from them has been very poor, their general attitude has been to try and avoid any commitment whatsoever to this vehicle and its problems."

    according to a friend
this hasnt been a problem for a few years now,,
This is his second and after our trip to Donald --

I wont hear a bad word about them.
a two and a half ton brick wall,
sat on a hundred no problems,,

totally and utterly devoid of character though--

his previous tow cars were all LR products,, several RR's and a Td5 that went bang and had electronic tantrums in such a way as to turn him off LR for life.

i think (i hope) he was refering that 'everyone' regards them as unreliable.. such as yota and nissan drivers that have 'heard' about the reliability issues!
