it must be something with land rovers and bass guitars.
count me in. cort make a good bass, i have had a cort 4 string acoustic electric for a while now and it's a very nice bass to play, but just recently spent some of my long service money on a warwick corvette $$ and i have a new favourite. my old Ibanez is close on 20 yrs old now and it's neck is a little warped.
on getting yourself a "good" cheap bass, you could look at the squiers and that type of thing, some are better than others, but for them you will shell out up to about $450, the next step would be up to the $1000 threshold, where you could get a bottom of the range G & L or warwick, cort, taiwanese fender, most in this range will have the name but will be made in the third world and may not be a keeper.
from there we go up to the over 2k mark and you will start to see some quality equipment.
then you are going to need an amp... do your homework! if you want something that sounds great, but don't really need a massive stack to cart around, go for a markbass or a fender bass (not rumble) 100. the Bass 150 is a little better as it has a 12" speaker instead of the 10" jobby in the 100. I've got a 150 and I'm very happy with it.

To the OP - Couldn't be bothered reading through the whole thread, but Ashton are doing some good startup packages for resonable money.

They're a great way to start out! I imagine that you'll pick it up pretty quickly given you've been on the drums...

Drums are Bass are the backbone of the band!

Been playing Bass on and off since 1993 and have had a very nice semi-acoustic Ovation for that whole time.

ooooh! Ovation, saw one of them in the bass people, quite exspensive, nice bass!
had another thought, OLP make quite a good entry level bass, these are cheaper versions of music man.

This is my bass (except I have the 4-string version and the body is the same colour as the head and neck).

And I have this amp (TKO75)

My next bass will be a fretless

Looks good. But the most important thing - what does it sound like?
