What did you do regarding the oil drain hose? Any pics of that part?
Well I fitted the Provent today, was pretty easy other than finding a big enough spot to put it as it is a bit long when you add the hose on the bottom but I eventually found a spot next to the windscreen washer bottle.
I made up a bracket to go from the aircon pump to the OEM cyclone thingy but because of the injector lines the provent stood too high to close the bonnet.....
So........failing cutting a hole in the bonnet, I moved it ouver the other side as there was nowhere on the drivers side that was deep enough for it to stand straight up.
So I bent up some flat ally sheet, drilled some holes, cut the hoses and threw it all together.
I just used a 13mm poly tee (from a watering system), some 1/2" hose (left over from another job), some 3/4" ID hose (I think it is, I didnt measure it but it was also left over from another job), 10 or so hose clamps and about 3hr to work out my first idea wasnt going to work and an hour to then fit it
I used the check valve for safety reasons as Dave explained in his thread.
Well here is the finished product, still a bit rough but I will neaten it up when time permits.

Hi McRover
Good job.
Is that hose heat rated???,looks like fire hose.I would be looking into heat rated hose in that area!!!!
What did you do with the drain?
I was looking at a catch-can and discard, but Ben didnt seem too keen so will go the drain to turbo return line like he did on Iggys TD5.
Got to get mine yet,but when it comes it will mean major service stuff on BlackBetty, atleast the trailer project is out of the shed!!!

I have run this hose next to an exaust before with no problems and I think the intake tube will burn before that does.
The drain hose goes to the drain off the OEM cyclone because when cooling the crank case will be under slight negative presure (as long as it is sealed properly) so it should empty the Provent on cool down rather than just by gravity so it runs behind the engine to the tee under the OEM cyclone.
I was thinking that the Turbo drain would be under presure so I didnt want to break into that as I dont think the check valve supplied would take a lot of presure.
Great work, thanks for posting this up!
There shouldn't be any pressure in the turbo drain. On a TD5 it is by far the easiest method.

what does it actually do (ive never heard of it before) and can it apply to the v8's aswell
So you can't be assed putting a new timing belt on, which will likely extend your motors chances of living a long time by ten fold, but happy to thumb around fitting something reduce a bit of oil film inside the intake
It is a MUCH more efficient breather filter (lets say 90-99% oil mass collected rather than 50% (at best) for most standard setups. On a turbo diesel, this means that you don't get your intercooler filling with sooty oil, and more importantly, it means your turbo should last longer. Many diesel turbos die because sooty oil mist collects, then the oil is evaporated/burnt, leaving a deposit of soot/ash.
It can be fitted to any vehicle (and future emissions legislation will require it (or similar)), but TD engines benefit the most.
EDIT - another benefit is that you lose/burn less oil - maybe LS1s should have one standard???And your oil viscosity should not increase as much as it currently does between services (more of the lighter fractions will stay in your oil for longer).
Matt - leave him alone - he is the first Tdi owner to do the install. THANKS McROVER!
